TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Josh Vander Hey had three hits and three RBI to lead the University of New Orleans to an 8-5 win over the University of Alabama Tuesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Vander Hey went 3-for-5 with a pair of singles and one run scored in first two at-bats as UNO snapped its five-game losing streak.

New Orleans (9-7) scored three times in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jeff Lanning put the Privateers on the board with an RBI double that scored Vander Hey, who reached on a one-out single. Mark McGonigle followed with a two-run double to left to score Nick Schwaner, who reached on an error, and Lanning to give UNO a three-run lead.

Alabama (9-9) got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single by catcher Mike Sharp. Junior right fielder Kent Matthes reached on a two-out single to left and moved to third on a wild pitch and stolen base. After sophomore third baseman Jake Smith drew a walk, Sharp singled through the left side of the infield to score Matthes.

The Crimson Tide added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, but left the bases loaded. Senior first baseman Matt Bentley reached on hit by pitch and moved to third on a throwing error by UNO third baseman T.J. Baxter. Matthes was safe at first on the play. Smith then walked to load the bases before Sharp drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 3-2. Pinch-hitter Tyler Odle was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases before freshman shortstop Josh Rutledge grounded out to end the inning.

UNO scored three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Johnny Giavotella started the scoring with an RBI double and Josh Vander Hey drove in a run with a ground out. Giavotella later scored on a balk by relief pitcher Will Stroup.

Alabama starter Casey Kebodeaux (2-2) lasted four-plus innings and allowed five runs and six hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

UNO starter Stephen Whalen, who entered the game with an 11.40 ERA and has lost his last two starts to Middle Tennessee and Louisiana Monroe, held the Tide to two runs and four hits through six innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Crimson Tide had numerous chances in the loss, leaving 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the twice. Alabama scored one run and left the bases loaded in the fourth inning and loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but did not score.

Vander Hey added a two-run single with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning against Jimmy Nelson as the Privateers extended the lead to 8-2. Vander Hey had three hits and three RBI in the win for UNO.

The Tide scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth off Jake Henderson to close the gap to 8-5. Rutledge and freshman second baseman Ross Wilson had RBI singles in the inning and a third run scored when junior DH Alex Avila reached on an error by second baseman Johnny Giavotella. Sophomore left fielder Brandon May, representing the tying run, struck out to the end inning.

Ryan O’Shea worked a three-up, three-down ninth to record his third save of the year for the Privateers.

The two teams conclude this two-game series on Wednesday, March 19, with a 6:35 p.m. (CST) at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Alabama is expected to send junior left-hand pitcher Miers Quigley to the mound, while UNO will counter with right-hander Jim McGonigle (4 G, 1-1, 5.93 ERA).

Diamond Tide, I hate to say it but this year's team reminds me alot of some Shollenberger's last teams. I have been a season ticket holder since Well's 2nd year but haven't gone yet this year....just from news articles it appears that we can't pitch, hit or field. What's your take?

IMO, it seems this pitching staff is missing BJ Green. While the pitchers are throwing bullpens, BJ is there watching and instructing on mechanics. He is able to iron out the little things that the pitchers are doing wrong. Right now you don't have that while the pitchers are throwing pens

As far as the fielding goes, I thought this would be one of the strong points of the team. I didn't see a bunch of errors during the scrimmages in the fall and spring leading up to the opener.

JoJo is right about the talent and ability that this team possess. It's there.

I would have to agree. There is talent on this team, but we are not playing with any confidence right now. The pitching staff appears to have good "stuff", but they are all having issues with control. This is something I would not have expected from the guys with a year or more of experience.

The starting pitcher for UNO last night pitched well, but he came into the game with a 1-2 record, and an ERA of over 11. Confident teams would be eager to hit against a guy with this record, but on several occasions we stood at the plate, took 2 strikes, and then were forced to become defensive hitters.

In the 3rd inning we had 3 errors, and only 2 hits. We started the game with 2 of those errors in the first.

There have been a lot of negative remarks made about our play so far this year, and maybe some of them are deserved, but as a team we need to stop letting the negatives get in our heads. This team needs to start believeing in themselves. We have the talent to play better baseball.
