Did Steve Spurrier want the Alabama job before CNS was hired??

Alabama did talk to Steve and he could have had the job if he wanted it.

Steve said at the time thanks but no thanks.

Steve had been at South Carolina for two years when Mal talked to him he told him he couldn't leave.

He said if Alabama had came calling two years early he would have loved to have the job.

Steve talked very open about this in the months after we got CNS.

Spurrier: No interest in Alabama job

In an effort to tamp out rumors, South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier gave a written release today to the media. Spurrier said he has no interest in the Alabama head coach job, referring to himself as "a South Carolina coach".

"I have no intention of leaving South Carolina," Spurrier said Monday in a written release. "It's always flattering when a South Carolina coach is rumored for these big time programs. This one will die down in two or three days, too."

UPDATE
Spurrier told his team on Thursday (Nov 30) that they are "stuck with him".

Spurrier met with the team Thursday in a previously scheduled closed-door meeting. A source close to the team told News19's Matt Barrie that Spurrier told the players that he came to Columbia, "to do things that had never been done before, including winning an SEC title," and that he's "not leaving until that's done."
He reportedly jokingly told them, "some of you might not like me, but you're stuck with me."
Honestly, what was Spurrier going to say? Yes I wanted the Bama job...
You never say you are interested if you know you are not getting the job.

He applied but there was no interest on UA's part...
Spurrier rumors were exacerbated by his wife's attendance in a skybox during the Auburn game. As Earle said, no interest on UA's part. His actions in the late 90's early 2000's blew up any chance of being hired at UA
QUOTE=mikes12;1635716]My own personal interpretation is that he wanted to use Bama's interest to either:
1) Take the Bama job
2) leverage a better contract with his current employer

whichever would have worked out better for him at the time.

How serious our interest at the time was, I really have no idea.
Again, no interest was shown on our side...[/QUOTE]

^^^So these mods are wrong? Go figure, these guys are closer to the program than you or I will ever be.^^^

Doesn't really matter what happen cause we have a great coach.

CSS did think about the BAMA job and the timing was just wrong.

The people who say we had no interest are just wrong.

I think any indication of interest on our part was purely polite. It also makes sense that Spurrier would withdraw if he didn't feel immediate interest. These guys do share an agent, you know? That's about all I can say about that...

IF Mal was ready to hire Rich Rod instead of Spurrier I have to believe that would have ended his time as the Alabama AD.

Luckily things worked out the way they did

I hope we all remember there was so many rumors floating so many different ways that it was (and even now is) impossible to sort all of them out. I remember a ton of names coming up - some of them humorous in retrospect. These included Jim Grobe, Paul Johnson, Greg Schiano, Jim Leavitt, Heath Ledger, Steve Spurrier, Rich Rodriguez, and Nick Saban.

I am of the view that we were about 15 years too late on the Spurrier notion. I think the game has passed him by, he embarrasses players (insert Terry Dean reference), and he only won last year because the SEC East was so mediocre. Sure, he beat Alabama, but USCe doesn't win that game if we're not coming off two highly charged emotional gut fights against Arky and UF plus an extra week for USCe to get ready.

Let's not forget something - for all the legendary status thrown Spurrier's way, he backed into his only national title (how that was not a split with FSU is still mind-boggling plus it took Nebraska losing to Texas and Arizona State losing to Ohio State to put him in position) and despite coaching SEVEN years in the SEC since his last title (2000), he has only come close once in all that time, and that was in year seven (last year).

Think about this: since he won a national title 15 years ago, the "legendary" Steve Spurrier has coached ELEVEN years in the SEC and has only won ONE conference title. Visor Boy never learned the necessity of a tough defense in the SEC - running the ball on offense and stopping the run. He was a video game wizard, but he wasn't that great against decent foes.

During that same time frame, Nick Saban has rebuilt TWO programs, won THREE SEC titles, and TWO national championships while coaching only NINE years in the SEC. I knew Saban was the right pick - but I just wasn't sure he'd come here.

I'm not sure where the miscommunication is coming from. I meant Lou Holtz convinced Spurrier to come to USC. That's a reported fact.

There was a lot of intentional confusion. If you go back and look at my posts, you'll see just the one name. When the Rich Rod thing came up, I called the one contact in the one office who would know and asked him what the hell was going on. He said "I don't know." Fortunately, Rita came along and saved us from a fate worse than death. I don't know where we'd be today if she hadn't thought she was too good for Bama...

That's laughable. Especially if she felt that the West Virginia job was better than Alabama. The Alabama job is one of the elite in college football. I knew we would be back and several coaches showed glimpses of what could be done @ Alabama but ultimately failed. Even Fran and Shula had some good years and I don't think that it's a coincidence that Fran flopped @ Texas A&M. If he had the mental fortitude to stick around he may have reaped the harvest. Like Spurrier, I think Fran was a good coach and could have done a good job but right now the right man is here. I hope he stays for a VERY long time!!

If you missed it or forgot, she read a criticism of her rather overblown hairstyle and overreacted...

Here's a scary thought: since 1996, Steve Spurrier has spent 11 years as SEC coach, Mike DuBose four. Yet not only have they won the same number of SEC titles but DuBose actually has a 2-1 record against SOS.
