By all accounts "Diddy" is a despicable human being. However, many of the people he is accused of harming did so voluntarily in order to keep the money flowing. Hard to find a Federal crime there except maybe kidnapping or sex trafficking. The government took their shot and came up short. Just another example of how money and power give you a major leg up over regular folks when it comes to the legal system.

Back when RICO was about ten years old, and they were beginning to try to broaden its reach, I had a young man come in to see me with an unusual scheme, questioning the amount of tax involved. He mentioned seeing another attorney in a nearby city, and it happened that he was a very old and good friend. I stopped him then and there and required written permission to exchange information with the other attorney, whom I knew to have a primarily criminal law practice. He agreed, reluctantly, it seemed, a danger signal. I heard him out, told him what the tax would be and confined my advice to that, not on the legality of his scheme. Then, I called my old friend. He practically went ballistic, telling me that I was in great danger.* The FBI was watching him every second and almost certainly trailed him to my office. His father was a Sand Mountain drug lord and a fugitive in Mexico. His scheme, looked at from a prosecutor's angle, amounted to money laundering, and the FBI had recently been trying to extend RICO to criminals' attorneys. I just laughed and said I would turn state's evidence and cooperate immediately. Since the transactions involved could constitute a crime, they were not protected attorney-client communications. Nothing ever came of it and the young man probably correctly calculated I wouldn't see him again after talking to my attorney friend...

*Things like this are the reason I dodged the question below about knowing any criminal law. Most attorneys know at least some principals about it, but doing it on a continual basis is its own specialty...

The not guilty on RICO was no surprise. The apparent quick accord on acquittal on trafficking is a mystery, unless, as you've pointed out, the jury decided to pin some responsibility on the women...

Feels like OJ all over again.

Yeah, remember when they said OJ killed those two people but it was in self-defense, so it was OK?

That case....I mean, I'll bet you Marcia Clark and Chris Darden wake up in cold sweats at night over that - because while I DO think the jury was somewhat hard biased in favor of OJ, the fact is that they presented an absolute botchery of a case. (Both are true).

From a legal perspective, Sean Combs won far more than he lost today. I still think he’ll go to prison for a while, but only a couple of years. And may even serve some or all of that under house arrest.

But like OJ Simpson, I don’t think he’ll dodge the court of public opinion. He’s clearly a despicable human being, and the majority of the public recognizes that, legalities notwithstanding.

I don’t think he ever really recovers. He has financial resources to take that hit, but will either cut back lifestyle or go bankrupt. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the women filed civil suits like the one that bankrupted OJ.

I can see this be an instance where everything that was brought to light was not enough for the RICO or trafficking charges but is enough to garner the max sentencing for the charges he was found guilty.

Money to inexperienced Prosecutor? and or other Feds.?
Those people don't exactually have a snow white reputation.

While I think most of us would love to see that, I'm too cynical to hold out much hope for it. I'm honestly expecting he gets "time served" and that's the end of it.
