Does anyone remember Ed Scissum?

He played in the late 90's. I think he played full back (#41 I think). Anyway, I was watching ESPN classic a couple days ago and they were showing the 97 Iron Bowl. The score was 17-15, Bama ahead late in the game. Bama had the football and was running out the clock. Kicthens' threw a little 3rd down screen pass from around Bama's 30 yd line. Ed Scissum caught the ball, but when he got hit, the ball popped out and the barn recovered. They went on to kick the game winner with time running down.

Some of ya'll were probably there, but I remember from the ESPN's replay that Scissum was just as upset as you could be about that fumble. In fact, on the ensuing kick-off, he caught the short kick and ran like hell. It took six or seven barners to get him down. Man, I felt bad for that kid. But probably no where near as bad as he felt for that fumble.

That kind of heart and dedication you can't buy.

RTR and God Bless Ed Scissum, where ever you are.

I remember Ed Scissum well. When he dropped the ball in the '97 Iron Bowl I jumped up and threw my shoe against the wall. I've never been so mad. It's just too bad that Scissum got that blame for that play. Kitchens called that play, what an idiot. I still can't believe they put the ball in the air. All Bama had to do was to run the clock and punt. Their defense had played well all day and would have shut down AU. Worst game I've ever seen. But Scissum was a good player.

1221,

Are you sure that Kitchens called that play? Calling him an idiot seems pretty harsh if you're not ABSOLUTELY sure. Actually, calling any BAMA kid an idiot seems pretty harsh to me.

In a game of that magnitude, it's unlikely that the coaching staff turned the play calling over to the QB. Even the Dubose staff.

ed was one of my students while is was in grad school at bama. (by the way, he was #33, i'm pretty sure).

as far as the play being called, word was that the o-coordinator called the play (if i remember correctly, he called almost all the plays) and dubose simply didn't tell him to change it.

it was neither freddie nor ed's fault that the play was called. only thing is that a headier qb (lets face it, while freddie was a heck of a competitor, he was not a braintrust) may have called a timeout (if we'd had one...i don't recall) and gone to the sideline to talk it over.

but it was a pretty depressing game.

For the record, Bruce Arians called the play. The pass was somewhat behind Ed and he was hit when he turned up field. The auburn offensive lineman were laughing when they lined up to kick the winning field goal.

And.... Do you remember Dubose's statement after the game?...... 'Duh, I didn't even know ole Bruce called a pass play. I might have changed it if I knew.'.... I was so P.O.'ed when I heard that. How can the head coach not know what is being called? Especailly when the game is on the line in the final seconds.

DuBose wasn't wearing a headset. Personally, I don't think there was anything wrong with giving a coordinator control of playing calling....if that coordinator understands and implements the HC's philosophy. Evidently that was not the case here. Arians stayed only one year. It turned out to be a good break for him and it probably helped us too. It certainly cleared the air of the foulest language I have ever heard.

After Bruce got fired he told his side of the story....he called the play but tried to get confirmation from DuBose before he did.Freddie didn't send in the play, he only called what was relayed to him.

It was a bad selection no matter who called it.Ed cried after the fumble. If memory serves me, he was hit almost the instant he touched the ball and never really had time to get a good grasp.

As has been stated, his number was 33.

It wasn't a bad call. A first down would have iced the game. The Auburn kid just made a good play. Scissum didn't have time to put the ball away. I believe he would have scored on the ensuing kickoff if they hadn't dragged him down by the facemask.

Every play called has a risk/reward ratio. In my opinion, the reward of the first down wasn't worth the risk and subsequent damages suffered. Of course that is hindsight.

Rehashing this play and game is like rehashing a root canal - painful and one memory I could do without.

Bama was 4-6 going into that game and a win against the farm animals would have gone a long way to easing the pain of Bama's first losing season in over 10 years. But alas, as happened many times during Dubose's tenure, the ball got dropped and the rest was history.

Well, rehashing is what we do in the off-season...

I remember thinking "That was no @#$% fumble; he never had possession!"

I remember I was at a friend's house and we were watching on his back deck. I actually punched his house when we ran a pass play. There were so many times that year when we needed a pass play to be called, but the one time we absolutely didn't need one, it was called. I was as ticked as I've ever been about a Bama game. I also felt terrible for Scissum because that kid was all heart.

That play had worked several times in the game. The Awbern players made a great play but I too question whether Ed had possession of the ball.

I was in the endzone the fumble happened. I was working for ESPN as a freelancer. All I heard from the headset was the producer yelling "A pass! A Pass! Kill the clock."

Bama's D was good enough to hold the Barn if we had to punt. I felt bad for the team. That game sealed the worst team in a Bama uniform since like 1950 somethin'.

This thread is painful.

1997 was my first year out of college after being in school from August 1992 to May 1997. Those were a very good 5 years for the Tide. 1 national title, 1 SEC title, 4 SEC West titles, and 52 wins. I was shell shocked when Alabama kept losing that year. I kept believing Alabama would turn it around. That 1997 season was my first vivid memory of a losing Tide team. I always believed the Tide was invincible to this point and that season changed my perception.

Now that the stench of NCAA sanctions are wearing off, I am ready for the Tide to return to its glory.

You're right, it was a horrible call. If we had been behind it would have been an ok call since it had worked earlier but being ahead and needing only to run out the clock, there was no need to put the ball in the air. The barn would've had time for maybe one play assuming we didn't make a first down just running it. That was Scissum's senior year too I believe which made it that much worse.
