I remmeber when this Tremayne Coger committed I was scratching my head because Surf and RTO hadn't never heard of him and couldn't find anything on him ( read old link below) and now he's a 4 star propect. Kind of makes me think Shula and Co. has a eye for talent.

Thanks for posting that old link! :)

I forgot how nobody even knew who he was, but the coaches. I guess those guys know how to scout a little talent, would ya say?

the staff was the first to offer Toryan Smith and AJ Jones.

They were on Beal when he was a 2 star. They were on Jenije when he was a low 3. They were on Coger when he wasn't even in a database. And of course, you can't forget Gilberry from a couple of years ago.

Its funny that reading the TT board after the cotton bowl, they were saying bama had more talent, etc. etc. funny, the only five star I know of is Brodie, that rest the staff has developed. lots and lots of three star recruits!
also, kinda reminds me of the kid one of the gurus or coaches invented 5 or 6 years ago with supposed great ability, suddenly all the sites had him listed and he didn't even exist!!

I remember that. Also, Auburn sent that guy a recruiting letter.

Having an eye for talent can be the edge that puts you over the top in recruiting. Sure, you want to always go after and get as many four and five star players as you can, but getting that player that doesn't grade out as a four/five star by some scouting service and he turns out to be one of your playmakers is just gravy.

I think CMS and staff have a knack for doing just that. Wallace Giberry is a great example.

I believe our highest-rated OL recruit from last year's class (Michael Johnson) was originally rated a 2* back in the summer before the season started when he committed to us early. By the end of the year, he was considered a 4*.

To put the high regard for this year's OL class into perspective:

Johnson was the only 4* we had at OL last year.

This year we already have three 4* OL committed and hopefully can cap that with Mr. Andre Smith.

Couldn't agree more. Think DeMeco Ryans, who, early on was only a 2-star.

.I think recognizing/recruiting/getting that guy is great, but that talent has to be coached. I don't think CMS, & staff get anywhere near enough credit for this!

I think it's more than just having an eye for talent. Anyone who watched Jeremy Beal's video knows that he is an excellent prospect. This staff is not afraid to go all out when they see a player that they want.

There's an infamous story about a coach calling Nick Saban one day and telling him how he had just seen the best HS QB in years at a game he attended in rural Ohio. Saban asked the coach what schools had offered him already and the reply was Duke and Miami of Ohio. Saban chuckled and said that he'd be laughed out of town if he took an unknown QB like that. That quarterback turned out to be Ben Roethlisberger.

Like the previous poster said, this staff doesn't care at all about star rankings. When they see a player they like, they don't hesistate one bit. The recruiting services have to play catchup with our staff not the other way around. That takes alot of confidence and I really respect this staff for going about it that way.

As one poster already mentioned, the staff also does a great job of coaching UP the talent that they have. As the talent on the team increases I can see great things in the future for Bama. I'm gonna love this recruiting class!!!
It gets better every year.

Great post...i don't think i've seen more that 1 or 2 recruits go down in ranking after UA offered them. We have been the first big time school to offer scholly's to guys that eventually have virtually every school in the nation on their tail. Its talent evaluation that gives you an edge by being a guy's "first love" that helps you fight back from the probabtion-induced problems we've had. Shula is learning to be an on the field head coach (and improving daily), but the guy and his staff knew how to spot talented football players from the day they stepped on campus.
