Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

I worry about shifting too much between centers because of the qb center exchange. But it would be a bit cheeky for me to second-guess the Saban guy much at this point.

I am concerned about a bad week of practice, although I remind myself that with a group of 17-23 year olds, what is happening today may or may not have anything to do with what happens two days from now.

Two players on the team holding a grudge against one another bothers me a little bit; if the rest of the players start to take sides, it bothers me a lot. I think Coach was sending a message, and not to us fans.

It seems Henny Penny has some friends. The sky is not falling just yet, and frankly, I trust Coach Saban on this issue. If he wants them to share snaps, I'm fine with that. Until something proves Coach Saban has no idea what he's doing, I'm going to trust the Process.

You make a great point Greg, a situation like this can be extremely tricky as how to handle it, by splitting game time reps between the two, it can affect the harmony & continuity Lindsey has brought to the OLine, on the other hand, the players that have supported & wants Kelly to be the starter, can bring down the chemistry of the team as a whole, if he doesn't get meaningful snaps..I don't like having situations like this that can split a team into different camps in support of a certain player..Lets hope that won't be the case..I have faith Coach Saban will handle this situation correctly & do what's best for his football program.I have no doubts about that at all..

And I too hope Lindsey becomes the full time & exclusive C with the 1st string unit..Thatwould bring a much needed continuity with the OLine & allow them to gel with a full time starting C..
Agree with everything you said.I want this resolved as quickly as possible, just the thread title, Center competition and bad week of practice gives the impression of going backwards.

I bet you believe the team has turned the corner, and the O-line is a big reason. Kelly is built like an NFL lineman at 6-5 and is very popular with teammates. CL is an old school Big Ugly barely 6-2, and more laid back, smaller and probably slower, but Chad has the personality and instincts, maybe he's Irish or something, but is a gamer. Against Kentucky last week, the RB's had a lot of success running to his right, off the guard. He continuously moved his man two or three feet to the left to help hold a good sized hole. It was consistent. We also had fewer false starts. You know all of this.

Lucky timing and skill for Chad Lindsay, I believe coach Saban liked the O-line that played against Kentucky last week and will do everything he can to keep it at that level and knows we turned a corner. Stats don't lie.

Agreed...I was surprised he said this...and then realized that he was sending a message...a BIG message. Not everyone likes everyone or gets along all the time...but they can all be men about it.

I wouldn't say "Turned The Corner", but, we are a more dominant OLine when Lindsey is playing..Kelly has the size & all, but, I don't think he has that "Mean Streak" that Lindsey seems to have, and that "Mean Streak" , seems to rub off on the other OLinemen when Lindsey has played..And that is the biggest difference in the two & is the difference in how dominant we are with Lindsey at C..JMO

So who are the two players? Runningbacks? Receivers? DB's LB's....

Excellent observation...wondered that myself. I really think we could be stirring the pot a little too much. With 7 OL's having played significant minutes on the 1st team...and several DB's moving in and out...and at least 5 top notch receivers...this could be anywhere.

Team mindsets are hard to instill in any group...especially when we are young and talented. We all want to be the "star" when we are that age. Leonard Bernstein, when asked what instrument was most difficult to play, remarked, "Second fiddle."

I originally said "We" probably both agree but edited it. I do think we turned a big corner and came together at the end of the Ole Miss game. We seem to be in much better sync since. I believe we would double our rushing yards against Colorado State and average 6 instead of 3 ypc.

Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

Several years ago we started Jeff Dunn over Gary Hollingsworth. Dunn was decent but our offense went to a new level once he was injured and Hollingsworth took over. I believe it was the same year that Siran Stacy started out second to either Chris Anderson or Murry Hill. It was obvious that Stacy was the better back in the first game but it took 2 or 3 games before he was given the starting nod. Coaches make these decisions based on several factors but sometimes they are wrong. I'm sure Coach Homer Smith, who I happen to think is one of the greatest offensive minds in college football over the past 25 years, had good reasons for Dunn and Anderson/Hill to start over Hollingsworth and Stacy. But when those two got their opportunity the team became much better. Same for Ryan Kelly and Chad Lindsey. It was obvious that once Lindsey came in to replace Kelly that the OL began to gel. I do think Kelly is a good center with a bright future ahead of him but unless his game has been elevated to a higher level since the injury the job is Lindsey's to lose.
What a great season. It ended with my television going out the window in the Auburn game, but it was fun watching the Ole Miss game, the Hollingsworth story and how great the Juco transfer Stacy was. I read Cecil Hurt ever week as we continued to improve with the LSU game confirming that we were legit.

Didn't Hill get injured? I remember Anderson having a great freshman year and then his production dropped of.

It ended with Curry kind of saying "see I told you I was a good coach", then running off to Kentucky with his blue tie and we were confirmed correct about his coaching flaws.

Not sure if it was Curry, but the next season Stallings inherited a team on par with Saban recruiting, a gold mine. Then Stacey and others were injured that 1st season and we kept rising only to fall to a signed paper napkin and the party was over for the next 15 years.

What I find interesting is that coach made this public. Not something that he usually does when it comes to player issues.

Ah, the obligatory "sky is falling" comment when us fans discuss anything that remotely sounds like second-guessing.

Check.

Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

I tune into Hey Coach for one purpose: to get a feel for Coach's mood. When he is in a good mood, laughing, at ease, it means we had a good week of practice and he feels as though we will play well - and we usually do. However, when he seems annoyed, impatient, is trying to send a message to the team, it often equates to a less than ideal week of practice and preparation, followed by not playing well. It would appear this week was that of the latter type. Now, that does not mean I think we're going to lose - I don't, but it could be the game may be tougher than we'd been expecting. And then again, I could be totally off base, again.

Re: During "Hey Coach," CNS Says Lindsay and Kelly will Share Duties on Saturday

The problem could be between Lindsay and Kelly. Hopefully that will be settled on the field today. I could also be way off base. Whatever the problem is it will get worked out one way or the other.
As far as Kelly and Lindsay rotating today it could be CNS way of solving the problem because, like someone on here stated earlier, the tape doesn't lie. It will be made clear who the better center is. If it's Lindsay then fine. If it's Kelly then fine. Let's find it out now.
