Game Thread: Early games on Rivalry Saturday

Look at how much celebration OU and other teams are doing today. Not because they have won a conference title or punched their ticket to a conference title game, but because they have most likely punch their ticket to the playoffs.

And they get to sit at home next week.

In this new landscape of college football, I think it is time for conferences to seriously contemplate the future of conference championship games.

Teams who haven’t made a CCG should not be celebrating more than teams that have to play again next week. If Bama wins tonight, I wish we could sit at home next week with our playoff ticket punched. Why would Ole Miss want to play next week and potentially lose their way out of the playoffs?

It's time to rethink these games. Go back to just declaring a champ based on regular season conference records. The SEC was the first to play a CCG and they should become the first to drop the game. But I know it will never happen because of the money being made.

You make a great point! They are so excited and they aren’t even playing for a championship of any kind next week. They will all be at the football facility watching while other teams in their conference play for a championship.

That's where the play-in weekend can accomplish both ... make more money, guarantee spots, and make everyone play one more game in between season and playoff

Big hurdles are getting other conferences to do it and not thinking too small about how many teams to include
