I enjoy my Shure E2C earbuds. I picked them up for about $40 on ebay. CNET.com provides some good reviews and includes the retail prices so you can match preferences and budget.

there's a picture of my uncle in the 70's wearing some huge, green, full, over-the-head headphones, but I can't find it to scan it. So I offer the ones above. ;)

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I can't stand the earbuds. They don't stay in for me, so the bass is all but eliminated no matter how much I play with the EQ on my iPod. I finally bought some with an insert to go into my ears and they work much better.

For serious listening, such as on a plane, I have some Bose over-the-ear phones that are nice. They are one level below the noise-canceling type.

If you don't mind, how much did you have to pay for those things? I've seen them several times on television, and they seem to be a great product. However, I also notice in really fine print that they put at the bottom of the screen, "Financing plans available."

Maybe I'm a bit of an old-timer, but I've never bought an earphones before that required a finance plan, so I have been a bit worried about price with those things.

Most Bose noise cancelling earphones run about $300 but they are worth it.
Unbelievable sound!

You're right about earbuds not staying in place. One of the reasons I like the Shure is because it came with 9 sets of insert covers (3 sizes, 3 materials) so you can find a good fit. But most (especially the cheaper models) don't come with that kind of option. I got mine specifically because I saw alot of flying in my future, but they stay in place even when exercising. I like them so much that I bought my wife a pair, but she won't use them because she doesn't like the way the cord wraps up over the ear instead of just hanging down like the original ipod earphones.

You say you picked them up for around $40, but most places I see them generally going from like $80-$100 on most sites. Is there anything wrong with the ones you got off of Ebay, such as refurbished products, etc.? Also, I did, however, find one website that had them for pretty cheap, $34.99. Are those the same thing that you are referring to?

That has long been one of my complaints with traditional earbuds. I can get them to stay in my ear fairly well, but to do so I basically have to jam them in so hard that it gets uncomfortable after a very short period of time.

Exactly how does the cord wrap over the ear? It isn't like that hard plastic piece that fits over the ear like those earphones that were all the rage about three or four years ago? I hated those, they drove me nuts.

Anyone spending that kind of money for headphones should check out Grado either the SR325 or the RS2. Even the Grado SR60 at about 70-80 bucks would give the Bose a run for their money.

Nothing wrong with the ones I got through ebay. They came in the original packaging with all the stuff included. The E2C is a discontinued model, which may account for some of the pricing differences. But mine are different than the ones in the site you linked. They came with a hard case, had 3 types of insert cushions instead of two, and were different in color.

They are similar to regular earbuds except that they are angled so that the cord goes up over your ear and drops off the back of the ear so they don't get pulled out so easily. That also allows for wearing the cord down your back so it is hidden. I don't know about all of the models, but mine have a heavier cord than the ones that came with my ipod.
Mine are not uncomfortable (no problems with numerous 4+ hour flights and long bicycle workouts) but I did have to find the right cushions for the inserts. One material is better for comfort, another is better for remaining inserted (especially while sweating). But I will add that after my wife told me she didn't like the set I got her I learned that it's best to try them out before buying. I guess I was just lucky they worked for me.

Recently i just bought the bose in ear headphones and i was blown away by the sound. Rich deep base which i've yet to find from any other *cheaper* headphone. They were $99 at circuit city, but i love them. They came with 3 different inserts to fit your ear, and come with a cord that goes around your neck so they dont get pulled off (which can get in the way sometimes). Definatly not for somebody that is going to be moving around alot, but man they are great. Fit my ear so well and sound so good that I litteraly can not hear what is going on around me for the most part.

If I remember correctly, I got mine for about $100 at Target. As I said, they are not the true noise-canceling headphones that run around $300, but they are pretty good.

I bought a nice set from Radio Shack, they clip behind your ears and there is a volume control on it. They cost $24, not bad, they are great with the ipod.
