Cheating on finals is the word. Per ND buddy this is about the only thing an athlete can do to get expelled (short of some Brian Bosworth type activity).
Corny jokes aside, this is definitely a big deal. Particularly after he'd assumed the reigns as THE guy midway through their season last year and went through Spring ball in that position, taking the bulk of the reps with the 1s.
So this on top of them losing the guys that they lost on defense puts them at a major disadvantage for the next 2 years or so.
Edit: and further, as it has been pointed out in other outlets, if this is due to academics, he can't get a scholarship ANYWHERE next season. So not only is this not good for ND's football team, it's not good for Mr. Golson either. Hate to see that.

Seems he violated a Residence Life rule/policy...not sure what it could be but I found their Residence Life Handbook online and it lists the code of conduct starting on page 22.

Exactly..It's hard enough to follow & repeat a championship run without any drama as it is..Losing a player as important as Gholson is to them..Will be down right crippling..Not good at all for The Irish..
While he's no AJ or Manziel, Gholson did have experience that can make the difference. Jay Barker was not exactly a passer in 1992, but his experience at not messing up was crucial. By his senior year, he was decent. McElroy was a rough cut but his experience was still important.
