Ok this is not my favorite, but it is close........RTR :biga:

"Well, they're not blocking anyone, so I'd thought I'd see if they could play defense." Former Tide QB Pat Trammel, explaining to Coach Bryant why he had quick kicked on third down. This was in the days of the "one-platoon system", when the same set of players played offense and defense.

"Alabama's cornerbacks don't impress me one bit. They're overrated. Real men don't play zone defense and we'll show them a thing or two come January 1st." -- Miami Receiver Lamar Thomas before the '93 Sugar Bowl. Thomas was involved in the Play of the Century.

"You'd better pass."
-- Marty Lyons (to Penn St QB Chuck Fusina) when he walked to the line of scrimmage to see how far the ball was from the goal line just before the famous goal line stand play.

I don't know if I'll ever get tired of football. One time I thought I might. . . I was out there on the practice field wondering whether football had passed me by. Then I heard the Million Dollar Band playing over on the practice field. When they started playing 'Yea, Alabama,' I got goosebumps all over me. I looked out there and those young rascals in those crimson jerseys, and I just wanted to thank God for giving me the opportunity to coach and contribute in some small way at my alma mater and be a part of the University of Alabama tradition."
--Coach Bryant in the late 1970s about tradition at Alabama (from Alabama Illustrated)

I think my all time favorite quote is this one...

"Well Eli, Smokey just came out of the tunnel, and he's about 100 yards away from me now, and if I had my deer rifle I believe I could drop him, back to you Eli" -- Jerry Duncan's comments to Eli Gold just prior to kickoff against Tennessee.

The funniest thing!

"The funniest thing was Billy Neighbors that day. We had made "bingo" our signal for an interception. Auburn has since copied it and we may go to something else, but the idea was to yell "bingo" when you intercepted a pass so your teamates would know they better block somebody because you're coming. Late in the game Auburn was trying to get something going, but Gary Phillips put a terrific rush on Dick Wood, the Auburn quarterback. Neighbors had been temporarily blocked on the play, but at the last second he rose up and Woods pass hit him in the belly. Neighbors started jumping up and down, and yelling, "Can't think of the word! Can't think of the word!"-Paul Bryant

Personal quote from my own family

Here's the story...

My brother in law (GA Tech alum) and my sister (UA alum) were in Athens, GA for a wedding and drove by the stadium. My sister had been to all the home football while in college but was there for the social scene, not the actual football-however like everyone, she knows Alabama has 12.

As they drove by the UGA stadium there was a sign that said "Home of the 1981 National Champions". She got a confused look on her face and ask my brother in law why they did not list THE REST OF THEIR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS?!

My brother in law looked at her and said,

"Caroline, not everyone can be like Alabama."

Isn't it the truth?

I could be wrong but to expand more on the Lyons quote, I heard that Penn St QB Fusina actually asked how close was it to the line. Lyon's replied:

"About an inch...you'd better pass."

At least thats' what I hear.

Heard in the hotel in B'ham after the pasting we (finally) put on Notre Dame--2 older irish fans talking over the breakfast buffett:

"I got bad news for you buddy; it looks just as bad in the paper as it did on the field yesterday."

And then there's this:

"I waxed the dude." Rory Turner

And then

"When I had the opportunity to come and play here, I jumped on it. It's Alabama; what can you say!" Shaud Williams

and

"The first person I want to thank is God for giving me the ability to play football. Because without the ability to play the game, I would have wound up at Auburn."
Marty Lyons

And finally,

"When I see those crimson jerseys and crimson helmets, I'm humbled to have played for the University of Alabama." Derrick Thomas

exiled

(of course, my sig ain't too bad either...;))

Tough question, so many great quotes. Here are mine

:biga: " I can reach a kid who doesn't have any ability as long as he doesn't know it "

" He can't run, he can't pass and he can't kick. All he can do is beat you "
Coach Bryant

" The expectation level is high at the University of Alabama and it should be. What's wrong with people expecting excellence " Coach Gene Stallings.

" I wish Coach Brynat were here to see this defense play " Bill Oliver

" It was gut check time. We looked at each other. We knew this could be it. When they broke the huddle, everything went silent. Boy talk about gut checks " Barry Krauss

" I can't imagine being in the Hall of Fame with Coach Bryant. There should be two Hall of Fames, one for Coach Bryant and one for everybody else " Ozzie Newsome

And of course you gotta' love Jerry Duncan's candid attitude...

"His ear had a real nasty cut and it was dangling from his head, bleeding badly. He grabbed his own ear and tried to yank it from his head. His teammates stopped him and the managers bandaged him. Man was that guy a tough one. He wanted to tear off his own ear so he could keep playing."

Tennessee lineman Bull Bayer talking about his Alabama counterpart and first All-American Bully VandeGraaf in the 1913 game.
