FIFA thread...

An unprecedented move in the strictest sense of the word.

And then there's this.....

President Donald Trump reportedly pushed for FIFA to allow United States striker Folarin Balogun to play on Monday against Belgium.

FIFA stunned the soccer world with its announcement Sunday that Balogun's one-match ban for his straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup Round of 32 had been suspended and he would be allowed to play in the Round of 16.

Sunday afternoon, several reports emerged that Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday and asked for the World Cup governing body to review Balogun's ban.

Trump and Infantino have a chummy relationship. The two have been especially friendly in public as the president is expected to play a role in the trophy ceremony at the World Cup final on July 19. In December, Infantino and FIFA awarded Trump the inaugural "FIFA Peace Prize" at the World Cup draw.

After FIFA announced Balogun could play, Trump posted to social media and thanked FIFA for reversing what he said was an "injustice," though he did not imply that he had a role in FIFA's decision.

Agreed...

And I'd absolutely love to know what went down behind the scenes to suspend the red card...

Belgians are having a fit, I suspect they should send Hercule Poirot in to investigate!

odds are this, like everything else from this idiot, is him inserting himself and taking credit when there is a spotlight shining on something

Yeah I don’t buy it from our current commander in chief. He may have asked but I’m not sold he has that kind of connections and clout.

Games are being played in the US, FIFA needs the US in it at least until the final 8.

Little bit of irony with Trump inserting himself into this, Balogun is only able to play for the US because of birthright citzenships.

Belgium striking back. What are the chances of a reversal of the reversal? Is there any precedent of this from FIFA's past?

He's now taking credit, on the basis of his call to the head of FIFA. At the very end, he said the quiet part out loud. He said that, if Belgium beats us, he'll say it was rigged, just like that 2020 thing, then he said "but enough of that" or something like that and closed out...
it wouldn’t surprise me in the least bit if the ptb at fifa let him think he caused this to happen. similar to nixon giving elvis a badge

I have mixed feelings. One one hand, I know that FIFA is horribly corrupt. I do intend to follow the president's suggestion to look at this ref's rep, although I know it's probably a red herring, like all his lies. But there was an open issue whether some refs could be admitted to the US because of past convictions. OTOH, is any intervention by Trump in an international sport, and taking credit for it, a good idea? Look for him to tie it to NATO...

From The Independent yesterday:
“In checking the footage, they state that slow-motion replay should only be used for “facts” (like the position of a player or the ball) whereas normal speed should be used for the “intensity of an offence.” Why, then, was the referee repeatedly shown a stream of slow-motion images? The incident and impact did not happen in slow motion; it should not be judged as such.”

The call on the field was a throw-in. The referees committed a procedural error. FIFA corrected their mistake. The focus should be on the work by @ussoccer, @jtbatson, @dhelfrich21, and their team to set this team up for success and to bring the country together. End of story.
