The first flag was on us for not having enough players on the line of scrimmage. THe announcers later clarified it by saying that the receiver did not check off with the line judge, and that we were flagged because of this. THe annoucer said he did not know that the receiver had to do that, and I know I did not. Could anyone clarify this rule for me? I often see the receivers check, but I did not realize it was mandatory.

I thought the facemask should have been of the 15 yard variety resulting in both penalties being enforced instead of off-setting. The tackle was made by the bird cage. Automatic first down.

I agree. A guy gets taken down only by the facemask and that penalty is offset b/c the receiver did not signal to the line judge that he was on the line?????? I could understand if the penalties were equal (incidental facemask), but not a personal foul. It didn't matter b/c we made too many mistakes in crucial times on O and gave up too much on D at the start.

Re: Flag on the fake punt

How about Blackledge counting the guys on the line of scrimmage. He counted to 6 and then when it came time to count number 7, he said, "that guy is not really on the line of scrimmage." That was pathetic. I really like Blackedge but that was ridiculous. I guess he wasn't really on the line of scrimmage Todd. I guess it just looked like he was but he really wasn't.

I thought that was a rather strange ruling as well. I didn't know the player had to check with the official to make sure he was on the line. It was clear he was on the line of scrimmage anyway, why does he have to check with the official if he knows??? Strange call.

I've never heard of such a rule.

I guess the official got his feelings hurt since the Bama player didn't turn to him and ask for his blessing on where he stood on the line.

Ridiculous!:mad2: Our player almost gets decapitated and it looked to me and everyone that I was watching the game with, our guy was on the line. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has to pick his head up off the ground.

I think it should not have been offsetting. It should have been a first down. I have resigned the fact that Refs in Arkansas and LSU are paid!

We feel the same way about Florida and Auburn.

I thought at first the call was for a facemask but since there were so many down (4) I figured it would offset. I didn't know why the illegal formation was called but on the replay at the stadium we could see it. Either way once there are fouls against both sides they offset.

When one of the fouls is a personal foul, both fouls are enforced. This would have resulted in a first down for Bama. That rule about penalty enforcement is to protect players. Since the facemask was not ruled a pf (total BS), this was not brought into play.

Still, this did not decide the game. LSU deserved the win...

Ahh...I see. Yea the facemask was ruled incidental even though it looked like his head almost came off...and that was what I could see on the replay screen. Homefield advantage.

my understanding is...
only if the personal foul is committed after the play (dead ball) then both would be enforced since the illegal formation was committed during live play. if the personal foul occurs during live play it'll offset with the illegal formation penalty

Hmmm, possibly. Perhaps tomorrow one of our resident fb officials will chime in...

That made me absolutely want to vomit. The receiver didn't notify the line judge that he was on the LOS?? Isn't that why there is a freaking line judge?! Maybe the QB should notify the head official of the snap count. Or the defense should notify the referee's of the blitz?!

I have to agree with you on the AUB and FL referee's. You guys were especially robbed at AUB.
