"Fly In The Ointment" Crowd Now "Mid Major in the NCAA" Crowd

I have been hearing the murmur for a while now, but now I worry it will become a roar - "The power conferences are down, and this should be a year for the mid major to shine." If so, this could not be a help for UA NCAA hopes.

Just heard a perfect example on the Brando show - Tim and Mike Decoursey discussing "Bracket Busters" weekend. There was discussion of teams off the radar a bit - New Mexico, Long Beach, Wichita, Creighton, Murray State, Tennessee State, etc.

Brando said he thought there was too much focus on RPI and SOS. The two then spoke on Alabama, and Decoursey said he thought Bama needed 3 out of the next 4 to get in. I am beginning to think the media has a higher standard for Bama than we are thinking is the case, and this sometimes seeps over into the selection process.

Seth Davis said over the weekend we were out.

The selction process, and media perceptions which influence things, are just too fickle. Last year it was all about RPI and SOS, we heard "The Committee sent a message on scheduling" stuff - now less than 365 days later we are seeing an about-face by the media.

Just like the sudden change to not have your success in the last ten games as a criteria tipping point, something that had to really hurt Alabama last year. It is almost becoming a yearly guessing game as to what factors will carry the most weight come Selection Sunday.

Dare I say - could we construct a BCS type formula to give us the top 68, and just eliminate the mysterious smoke selection room altogether?

Mike is correct on Alabama. Jeff Hathaway the NCAA tournament selection committee chair would agree with that. Looking at the totality of the circumstances right now and how things have materialized at this point in time Alabama is not a tournament selection committee favorite. There are coaches and teams more deserving. I hope that changes over the next couple weeks.

This is what I have been saying. The committee has a moving target and they like to give the benefit of the doubt to the mid majors. They have sometime screwed the big conference teams especially the SEC in recent years. See Bama last year. Miss State the year before. We have to win all our remaining games to have a fairly certain bid.

You need 20 wins at a minimum on Selection Sunday and the committee could care less about the suspensions and the return of JG right now. How he will even be incorporated into the team structure right now is questionable. The aruement that CAG made certain disciplinary decisions may be commendable to several observers but the byproduct and overall team dynamics has not risen to NCAA tournament level inclusion.

The NCAA is full of it. In the past 8-8 in the SEC and sometimes 7-9 has gotten you into the tournament. Last year we were left out at 12-4 while UGA got in at 9-7 b/c they lost to better teams OOC.

We're not a NCAA team right now, but go 3-1 and win 2 at the tourney and I think that starts to change.

While projecting who gets in at this point isn't exactly pointless, what anyone says about bubble team at this point is.

Lot's of "safe" teams would immediately become bubble teams with a bad loss at home, and vice versa for winning one.

Your negativity lately is wearing thin....

35 rpi, 15 SOS.... If we go 8-8 in conference we should be ok. Jerry Palm and Lunardi have us in......

Yeah - Bama has not gotten the green on uconn's "20 and in" theory several times in the last 12 or 15 years.

The 20 and in theory has been expanded to 20 wins, Winning conference record, and an RPI no higher than 35 or so. Wimp used to front load his schedule with cupcakes and skate into the tourney with 20 wins. You can't do that now!

the best way to put it is every day the situation looks different. Bama has put themselves in a position to get into the tourney. Win and we are in. If we win games, we get into the tourney. Are we securely in, no but thats ok. If we want to convince people we belong in the tourney, then we should beat teams no matter where we play them who are not in the tourney. plain and simple.
