Galarraga's blown call

This is a first time that I can remember that everybody associated with baseball (outside of MLB front office as they haven't commented on it, yet) all are in agreement that it was a bad call, and that if Bud Selig doesn't overturn the decision (which the ump, after the game, is all but begging Selig to do) things might get ugly for Selig.

In my eyes, Galaragga has thrown a perfect game.
 
The solution to the problem is Selig should simply overturn the call, especially since the very next batter was retired. The game could go in the record books as a 28 out perfect game. They could put an asterisk next to it giving it even more historical significance.
The play was a classic example of an umpire reacting too quickly to what is happening in front of him. If Joyce had just stood there for a few seconds he may have realized the runner was out.
The only thing that I saw that was not perfect about the play was the pitcher kind of snowconed the catch... but he did appear to have control of the ball in the webbing of his glove.
 
To Joyce's credit, he did immediately after the game hone up to it and didn't make excuses. While it is hard to say ok to that and go on, he deserves some credit for admitting making a mistake and fessing up to it. Not all umpires are like that.

As far as Galarraga handled it, kudos to him too. I mean he lost a perfect game, then a no hitter all on that call. Talk about a tough pill (the size of Mt Everest to swallow) and he didn't let it get to him nor did he make any comments about Joyce.

Overall, Joyce and Galarraga handled it professionally and that is rare this day and age.
 
I just don't understand how Joyce doesn't automatically give the call to the pitcher. If its a bang-bang play, doesn't the defense get the call? Much less when the call decides history?

I'm ....ed about it, and I hope Detroit does something to .... off Selig, by holding a pregame ceremony to celebrate Galaragga's perfect game. Cause as far as I can tell, everybody in baseball, excluding the moron in charge and his henchmen, already has given Galaragga props for the perfect game.

I understand he doesn't want to set a bad precedent, and I understand him wanting to have the umpires' backs....that's the best thing for the long run. But in this case......come one d-bag, overturn it.
 
Bud Lite needs to grow a set and realize the right thing to do is to over turn the call. Joyce did everything but beg to have it overturned. Agreed, you don't want to set a bad precedent, but this is a case where it is understandable. How many years have they been playing MLB and there have only been 20 perfect games. As I read somewhere, more people have orbited the moon than have thrown perfect games.

Having said that, as a HS umpire I can tell you that bang-bang plays are a LOT harder to judge than you think. It's easier to sit in the stands or watch it on tv and tell than it is to be right on top of it. This umpire saw he was wrong, felt horrible, and apologized because he knew he cost that kid a shot at baseball immortality. That was classy on Joyce's part. I'll let you know how I react when I blow my first call.;)
 
Having called some ball myself, I can appreciate how tough the call Joyce had is to make. No replay, no mulligans, do-overs, or second chances. I admire his candor in admitting he missed it. Now, one thing I noticed when I was watching it live on tv, he (Joyce) didnt get himself into the best position to see that play. He was up the 1B line near the outfield grass, he didn't give himself any angle. It is hard to get a good look at that type of play, where the runner is coming straight at you, as it messes with your depth perception. If he had been five to six feet toward second base, he'd have had a much better view and been more likely to have gotten the call correct. In umpiring it's all about position... oh and hustle... and knowing the rules... having thick skin helps... and it doesn't hurt to have some good common sense... well, you get the idea. :)
 
Too bad it didn't happen as the catcher was Alex Avila. I'm by no means a Selig fan, but think he did the right thing. No other calls have ever been overturned to preserve any other no hit/perfect game bids.

As an Alabama fan you have to hate it for Avila. A young guy like that just called a perfect game and he won't be associated with the history of that. It sucks.
 
Selig had a great opportunity to right a wrong here and for some reason- chose not to. Not surprising coming from the same moron who completely OVERREACTED to the All Star game ending in a tie a few years ago. Yeah-let an exhibition game determine home field in the World Series! Brilliant! Overturn an obvious wrong call on an out to preserve a perfect game- no thanks. Makes PERFECT sense Mr. Selig- thanks for all your hard work.

Have any ever had a play with 8 2/3 of the game already decided to end it like this one? I've been around and watched baseball for almost 30 years now and have not seen one end like this. While it would open Pandora's box to overturn it, if they are going to use instant replays at the game, they should have set it up for a situation like this instead of just reviewing home runs. Its called a contingency plan and major league baseball failed to have one.

Now, I wish the official scorer would have ruled it an error to give him a chance at least at a no hitter. While not as popular as the legendary perfect game, no hitters are something to brag about too. To the best of my knowledge, THAT could be over-turned to give him the no hitter.

I just feel the guy deserves something for that monumental effort.
