Last night was the episode I've been waiting for! The Lannisters are so polite, sending their regards and all...

I really hope book 6 comes out soon.

I don't have HBO but is "Game of Thrones" worth following?
No spoilers, but some warnings:

There are currently 5 books published of a supposed 7 book series. It's up to you whether you prefer to read the books first. If you get into it, you're still in for a long wait. I would recommend avoiding spoilers if you're at all interested. (I usually prefer to wait until the whole series is complete before starting, but I was hearing too many spoilers so I went ahead and caught myself up on both books and the show)

The language/sex/nudity/violence is pretty graphic (some of the actresses are actual and former porn stars). So if that bothers you, put it on your avoid list.

The story is one of the most complex and multilayered I've ever read. It jumps into the middle of the events and the history/back story is revealed in pieces, leaving you to puzzle who is who, and how the events are related. It is not a cut and dry beginning-middle-end narrative. Reading the books definitely helps keep track of who is who and what's going on.

It does have magic, dragons, and other fantasy elements. If you like Lord of the Rings, you might like it. But Tolkein is childs play compared to this.

Although it is at its core a fantasy, GRRM put a lot of research into actual history in planning the events. Starks and Lannisters were modeled from the Yorks and Lancasters from the War of the Roses. There is also very little 'good guys' and 'bad guys'. Most characters are more complex and have both vice and virtue. But there are a few very bad guys.

i have to say that my wife and i watched the first couple of episodes and stopped watching because we thought it was basically cinemax sci-fi/bdsm fantasy with no story line. i have recently watched a few episodes and they have been a little more interesting, but they are still overly sexual in nature, not that i care that much about explicit sexuality, it just seems like they rely too much on that and too little on the (imo, very) interesting storylines.

Just like a lot of HBO shows, it is much more prevalent early on in the show. The gratuitous nudity and sex becomes more sparse as the season's go on. The violence on the other hand remains pretty much the same. That being said, it is an awesome show.

For me, I like books, movies, and TV that let me escape from reality with clear good vs bad themes and having good characters. I was interested in GOT, but the sex, violence, and no clear line in the sand turned me off.

yeah, i could tell it changed later in the series. i find it oddly compelling, but don't go out of my way to watch it. im usually not that fond of the excessive violence in the CGI era of fantasy/sci-fi (i feel that it, like the gratuitous sex, becomes the story) but i did find my self watching the wedding scene and just thinking, "well, how about that"

I think a lot of people get hooked on the books due to GRRM not treating his characters as things in a glass case to be handled with care. I have read all the books but think this last one, by far has the most violence, sex and torture since the second one.

FWIW the books I don't believe are as graphic nor do they revel in the violence and sex like the series seems to do. Plus it's easier to "fast forward" through the book.

If you enjoy reading a great writer and can get past the brutality which I think lends to its credibility, it is an excellent series.

BTW last Sunday I was almost praying for one of those usually annoying producers rewrites.

I agree with you from a "language/sex/nudity/violence" perspective. However, Tolkien kills GRRM when it comes to the complexity and depth of the world created. Nevertheless, A Song of Ice and Fire is a good series...thus far. Will be interesting to see how he ends the series. Personally, I suspect he will never "finish" it.

I've read the books; my wife has not. But, she's hooked on the show. We got to watch the latest episode last night. As soon as I knew that the wedding scene was going to be covered in this episode I settled in to watch my wife's reaction. She never saw it coming. She was horrified, but at the same time thought the story was awesome. She did respond, "That Argus Filch* is a real jerk!" ;)

Heh, my gf is a Harry Potter fanatic, and didn't recognize him in Game of Thrones. However, after Game of Thrones, we started to watch "World Without End" and when she spotted Brother Philip, she said "That's Argus Filch" to which I said "What? That's also Walder Frey who we just saw" and we had to look it up on IMDB for her to believe it. "World Without End" was a disappointment and we didn't even finish watching. "Pillars of the Earth" produced by Starz was much better.

I want to see "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End", but I'm waiting to read the books first. Got a few more books to read before I get to their place in the cue.

Thanks, mikes. I'll actually will read the books first before trying to catch up on the series, as I do with LOTR. Much appreciation on the quality of GoT.

There's been a lot of speculation that he really doesn't know how to finish it. If he can't bring it together, it reduces the series to a medieval/fantasy version of "As The World Turns."

This would normally be something that would entertain me. Thankfully I was warned off before getting into it. I can bear some "language/sex/nudity/violence" knowing that not everyone is sensitive to that, but from what I hear this series is way over the top.

imho, it (sometimes) takes away from the story. not always, but enough that i notice it. im watching it mostly when i travel as its a decent way to pass the time and most of the episodes are available on delta's in-flight entertainment system

So you watch it when your wife isn't around.
