Why is gas going up? I have not watch or read any news and wondering why it is going up. Oil as far as I know is still pretty cheap. What gives?

Probably because one person wrote an article in a newspaper saying that because of the situation between Israel and Hamas, gas prices were going to go up. And what happens? The oil companies read that one article, and Poof! Just like that, they raise gas prices. It doesn't take much at all to motivate them to raise prices, but it sure takes a lot to make them bring them down.

I heard that production was being cut by the Saudi's to increase demand..about a month ago?

But, who knows anymore? I saw a special the other night on how speculators and traders basically trumped the laws of supply and demand for the past couple of years and screwed us all.

Oil made it back up to around $50 after the Israel-Hamas deal plus OPEC cuts. It's now back down to $35 so expect prices to come down 30-40 cents soon.

I caught that on 60 Minutes as well and I came out of there feeling like a miniscule little ant...

Yet I've heard many on this forum defend the "free market" under such circumstances while the oil companies gouged us out of $3-4 a gallon gas prices.

Problems with Nigeria's civil war, I can see.

Goofball in power in Venezuela, I can see.

Trouble with pirates in the Persian Gulf, I can see.

However, I'd like for someone to explain how Israel vs Gaza has anything more than a tangential reflection on the movement or supply of oil. Last check, I didn't see many oil wells in either of those areas.

Not telling you anything you don't know, but you'll get your 'answer' by the end of the day. ;)

I'm sure it will be both incredibly awesome and full of first-person accounts of brushes with greatness. :)

2 weeks ago, there were gas stations up here selling regular from the cheapest $1.29 to $1.50 for regular. Now gas is all over the place. I have seen $1.51 to $1.75 for regular. Oil is going steady in the mid to high 30s a barrel.

Regardless of what some on here may think of him, now that Obama is in office I don't think the speculators and the oil companies will be outright gouging us anymore like they did last summer. I'm sure the price will rise slowly and surely, but nothing like last year where there was absolutley no good reason for oil to shoot over $140 a barrel.

Bush turned a blind eye to it so that his buddies could make their billions by screwing me and you over time after time time, e.g. the enron loop. The speculators and oil companies know that the President can take alot of unpublicized actions to make their lives utterly miserable, see Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt. That's why they never pulled that crap when slick willy was in office. There is a reason why the President is seen as the most powerful man in the world.

So President Bush was responsible for the middle east charging $140 a barrel for oil? Hmmm...

Here goes another rant. I think that more damage was done to the economy by the oil companies gouging America than the housing market did.

THink about it. With gas over $4 a gallon, it cost me $65 to fill up my little 15 gallon camry, and $70 to fill up my wife's oddyssey. I fill my car up 2-3 times a week and my wife's van at least once a week. Do the math and it doesn't take a genius to figure that I can't afford buy anything other than fuel and maybe a few groceries on top of my regular bills. FOrget about flat screen tvs and new cars.

If people want to know why I and so many others are broke, then look at the credit card bills and you will see why.

Thanks for the rant. I feel better already.

I'm not saying HE himself did it. I'm saying he turned a blind eye to the wall street speculators and the oil companies.

I am a democrat, if you havent noticed, so don;t try to convince me Bush was given a bad rep by the media. In 30 or 40 years history will remember him as a puppet of corporate america, alot like Herbert Hoover in 1930. History will also remember the early 2000s as a time where corporate greed ran rampant and unchecked.

Hmmm, Obama has stated that he didn't mind the gas prices being at $4 a gallon but only complained that they went up so fast. His appointments to run the energy department are on record saying that they support european level gas prices. Congress is now working a deal to increase the gas tax by 50%.

OPEC has cut production for a third time now that prices have fallen in an attempt to drive the prices back up.
