Leak isn't going to jump to the NFL or transfer. I think his dad is just like Portis's mom. He's got his eyes on NFL $$$.
You hit the nail on the head.

Mom says Portis will transfer from Florida
Patricia Portis cited a lack of playing time as the main reason for her son's decision.

"The bottom line is (the coaches) won't let his talent be shown on the field," she said. "Maybe he needs to be at an institution where all his talents can be taken care of. He needs to grow. He needs to be in a situation where they will develop him and not put him in one play and take him out the next. They would only let him run the ball and if he made one mistake and they would take him out.

"A lot of things were told to him in recruiting. Coach (Urban) Meyer never told him he would start (as a freshman), but he said he would give him a fair chance to compete. Josh feels he hasn't gotten that chance."

chris leaks brother was demoted at tenn from qb, to receiver, and the leak family boycotted tenn, and chris decided to go to fla. daddy leak was behind that as well. i can understand why chris is upset at fla he was putting up all american numbers at fla and then the option nonsense started. he almost got killed. josh portis a gifted young man followed urban to fla with a lotof promises coach fridgen wanted josh bad at maryland with his option oriented offense, but couldnt get him. and then to add insult to injury along comes brent schaeffer who was dismissed tenn, went to JUCO, put up great numbers, and is now at florida. sure a lot going on there. i think if tebow really looks at that situation i would move on.

I think this is a symptom of the times. There was a time, not too long ago, when players weren't even allowed to play varsity football as freshmen.

Then, freshmen were allowed to play varsity football, but had about as much chance of suiting up as a snowball in hell. The redshirt phenomenon began in order to not waste a year of eligibility sitting on the bench.

Now it seems freshmen expect to not only play during their first year, but feel they should be starting.

It used to be that almost all college QBs were either juniors or seniors, with most teams using a senior for often his one and only year in the starting position. I can recall a time when it was considered borderline insanity to start a sophomore at QB in the SEC.

Now we have true freshmen transferring because they're not getting playing time at QB. The world is truly upside down. RTR.

One of the greatest things a lesser school can offer a quality prospect is immediate playing time. If a kid is good, and wants to play right away, then his chances are much better at say, a major conference bottom dweller or Conference USA team, than at a perennial power like USC, Ohio State, etc.

First, Chris Leak, in my opinion, is not now and never will be professional QB material. So he stays. If Portis leaves, and Schaeffer signs, then Schaeffer would have 2 years of eligibility? He would start in 2006 and 2007. If Portis leaves then Tebow definitely signs with UF, takes 2006 as RS plays behind Schaeffer in 2007 and has 3 years as a starter. He would probably have to sit for at least 2 years behind JPW and have only 2 years as a starter. It's easy if you do the math.

why would he have to sit behind JPW. What has JPW done. He has a couple TD passes in mopup time big deal. I am not saying that he may never be great but what has he done..... Why does everybody think that JPW is going to be the starter for the next 3 years? Nothing is set in stone... may the best player play

... sure, it's easy if you do the math - but you apparently did not do the math - unless i am reading your statement wrong

admittedly, i have only attained the level of B.S. in Mathematics, so i'm probably over my head here...but,

my question to you would be; why would TT have 5 years as a gator and only 4 years at BAMA?

must be graduate level math :D

I think GrayTide is saying JPW has three years as the QB at Bama. So if TT does a RS his first year, JPW will be a SO. Then when JPW is a JR and SR, TT is a backup. Then when TT is JR and SR himself he can start, after waiting 3 of his five years. At UF, TT would only have to wait 2 years out of his five to start, leaving three years as a starter. Maybe while working on that B.S. degree you should have spent a little more time on logic problems! :)

The only thing that this tells me is that Schaeffer is a Florida lock now. However, if CUM shrugs off Schaeffer after this transfer, I'll start to worry.

...ouch! :D

there ya go, see i did the math and it was not easy

perhaps GrayTide should have said "it's easy if you do the logic"

A tangent universe
I bet this article is BS. The Florida newspapers have been printing BS articles all year to lead Tebow to ALabama:

1). Leak to the NFL
2). Meyer will not offer Brent Schaeffer
3). Portis transferring

Its a bundle of lies. Leak and Portis arent going anywhere

It sure doesn't sound like Meyer has good communication with his QB's. If you remember Leak filled out NFL papers and Meyer said he didn't know why he would do that and didn't know that he was going to. And now, according to the article, he was planning on playing Portis in the upcoming bowl and Portis may not even be there. That can't be appealing to Tebow. I would think he has seen quite the opposite from Alabama.
I too think there is definitely a problem there, and also agree that TT has to like what he sees from CMS, if, for no other reason,by comparison. I posted, in another thread, that I had heard/read/seen, somewhere, earlier in the process, that TT's family didn't seem too impressed with meyer. Maybe they sensed something in him that gave them cause for some doubt. Maybe those doubts are being realized.

SIAP, but what effect does Portis leaving UF have on Tebow?

I'm not hanging our signing class on one guy's (Tebow) commitment, but I know many folks are. I wonder what Portis leaving will do to Tebow's decision?

I hope I am wrong about Tebow going to Florida, kind of a gut feeling especially if Portis follows through and transfers. Schaeffer is kind of the X factor, he is the type QB Meyer needs to run his system, whether or not he and Meyer can co-exist is another issue. I think Leak is expendable leaving lots of opportunities for playing time for whoever UF signs at the QB position. IF Tebow does sign with Alabama then we have a full stable of QBs, if he picks UF then all is not lost, assuming we can get Andre Smith and shore up the OL.
In fact, we might not get a QB this year. I still think if we get Tebow Barnes transfers.
