the grades and scores you need to get in if you are in the north atlanta suburbs is even higher. In order to make sure there is room for kids all across the state, there's a de-facto quota across this area. There are legitimately kids in our area getting into MIT, RIT, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Duke, Vandy, Stanford, etc but getting deferred or even denied at UGA or GA Tech. The captain of my son's team last year was in the magnet program (highly viewed STEM academic program), straight A's with a 4.4+ GPA, 4 year starter in sports (2 year captain), and I think a 32 on ACT and got deferred, then was only able to get Spring enrollment so had to do a semester at KSU.
When I was in school, we used to joke that you had to roll up your car windows on the way through Athens or they'd throw a degree. Things have certainly changed.
