Georgia Southern Recognition Thread

Plenty of congratulations are in order for Bama players and coaches. I thought Gentry and Hanks and their best games, along with McCarron; the defense was as dominating I’ve ever seen a college defense.

That being said, sometimes you have to get punched in the mouth to "get it". In my opinion, the game against GA Southern prepared Bama for this win as much as the game on Nov. 5.

Certainly, LSU looked at game film from GA Southern on how to attack this defense. Unfortunately for the Tigers, so did the Bama coaches. LSU's staff is good enough to have recognized that as a deficiency. If the GA Southern game did not play out the way it did, it would have been more difficult for the Bama coaches to recognize that defensive shortcoming, and even more difficult for college age athletes to understand and to convince themselves it was a piece of the team that needed some improvement. So, thanks Georgia Southern for a great, competitive game that helped get us ready to tame the Tigers. ROLL TIDE!!!

absolutely helped us to prepare for the speed option but, believe it or not, has given the media fodder to calling out SEC offenses. Now, they're pointing to GSU's yards and points vs Bama as proof that SEC offenses are horrendous. Like I said in another post...people are nuts

Excellent post. I was on my knees thanking Southern for their hard knocks lesson on containing the option for 4 quarters as soon as I saw our defensive players in perfect position on their first few options attempts last night. The LB's played the QB option to a tee as well as the corners. It was three on two on many occasions, and our two beat their three around the end every-time, and having Georgia Southern on the schedule along with their execution certainly helped us shut LSU down.

Georgia Southern was the best coached team we played all year..And I thought the best O-Line we faced as well..I aree with ya..That game was a wake up call for our Players..

LOVE this topic!! Could not agree more!!! Nothing like LIVE training and eventual watching film to drive home the importance of certain plays. I have to say too there was an article posted here last week that TOTALLY outlined what we needed to do towin this game and it couldn't have been more perfectly executed by our CRIMSON TIDE!!! I even took notes from the article so I could watch for certain plays. The only way this game could have been more perfect was to score TD's instead of FG's, but we'll all take it, right?? :biggrin2:

The Georgia Southern game helped but even without that game, LSU's little bit of success with the option against Bama in Tuscaloosa was enough to get the team (coaches and players) prepared during the layoff period.

I'd forgottern the GaSouthern angle until reading this post. Excellent point! A shoutout to GaSouthern for exposing an aspect of our defense that needed shoring up. And special thanks to our coaches and players for doing what it takes to make the adjustments.

i remember in the week leading up to GSU Kirby Smart saying something to the effect that when they got scheduled in they weren't a triple option team and that they would have never scheduled them if they knew a triple option was coming, since it has nothing to do with any team Bama had faced in years. I bet he thinks MUCH differently about that today!

My boss (Ohio State fan) is among those calling out SEC offenses. He actually said Bama's offense was terrible. I asked him, "Don't you think LSU's defense might have had something to do with that?" I also pointed out that Bama had 384 yards against LSU's D. That ain't too shabby.

I think having 47 days to prepare helped more than playing gsu.

I'm watching the replay this morning, and I'm seeing very little similarities in gsu's flex bone/triple option, and what lsu tried to do last night. What you saw last night was BAMA throw some defenses at JJ that COMPLETELY CONFUSED him. They couldn't run up the gut, they couldn't run outside, and they couldn't pass. Very little read-option, option-run, flex etc on the part of lsu last night.

I'm convinced that J. Lee stayed on the sideline because LSU prepared for the option to be the key piece to their offense. Perhaps LSU prepared for that and stuck to their game plan and were trying to establish something on the edge to fore the safeties up and open up passing lanes down field. Glad to see all the DBs, LBs, and D-linemen so prepared for the option - extra kudos to Jerrell Harris for his performace and improvement in this area. VERY disciplined performance!

... i disagree with this - obviously lsu did not run all over us in the first game, but i think it was obvious when jefferson came in that we had not game-planned for the option, and in my opinion, us not being ready for that made a big difference, on their side of the ball, in the outcome of the game; field position, fg's, etc.

... i think the gsu game was far more valuable preparation than anything our scout team can bring to the table - as has been stated elsewhere, gsu did have more yards and more touchdowns against us than any one

no sweat! I thought we defended just fine on 11/5. I think we knew how to defend it, but no question, that late in the game, we could have made the transition a little better, I guess. Overall, I thought we certainly did bend, but we did not break. We defended the option. Not as well as last night, but enough to give us a chance to win.

Again, JMO, but I think 47 days meant more than playing gsu.

I agree with the OP and said as much before last night, playing that game would help our defense. While the two options games of GSU & LSU are not necessarily similar (as aj pointed out), what it did do was point BAMA's defense & the staff to our weakness on the edge, work on their defensive lateral plays and key on defending the edge/pitch man. Bama didn't do either very well in either the LSU game or the GSU game which allowed JJ to make a difference in the first matchup. LSU doesn't run the option near as well or even similar to GSU but there's no doubt playing that game, defending it, helped in this one.

Si. I think we learned plenty from our first game against lsu. I think against gsu, we confirmed lessons that we learned from JJ the first time around....that you have to protect the edges and the secondary has to hold their assignments. Against gsu, we learned that the flex/triple option can be a booger to defend against; and thankfully we won't see it again.

Georgia Southern fan and new Alabama fan here. Congrats once again on your win and kind words about us. Although we lost in the semis of the playoffs, playing you guys helped us too. Playing you guys helped our confidence, and our offense really got rolling starting with the game with you guys. My experience at Bryant-Denny stadium is probably the best I've had in college football. Thanks for your hospitality during our game, and congrats on the national title. You guys definitely deserved it, and anyone who said you guys didn't deserve a second chance is crazy. Go Eagles and Roll Tide!

Sorry we could not hold up our end of getting the "other" D-I National Championship but i'm proud that our team played the champs and did not get steam rolled like App State did against VaTech this year.
