If some fan were to throw a leg lamp at him during the game, he would be less likely to get poked in the eye by the leg lamp's "toe."

i remember shaun alexander had a big ol' face mask his first two years here. i am not sure why he has that. it really does look funny. it's not a linebacker facemask. it is a nose tackle's face mask. lol.

Players choose the "lineman" style of facemask (3 bar), the more extended version, because it provides more protection. But another reason it is chosen is because it looks unique. It restricts neck flexibility front to back, however, and its not uncommon to see a player change to a 2 bar style later on.

The only explanation is that there is no such thing as a 'linebacker' facemask or a 'running back' facemask.
Well it's not a good idea for backs and receivers to have a facemask with a vertical bar in front of the eyes/nose area. It could mess up focusing for catching the ball.

Coffee's facemask does not have a vertical bar on it. As a matter of fact, I don't think any of the facemasks these days have vertical bars on them, pretty positive on that. Even the linemen and linebackers don't have vertical bars on their facemasks (at least down the middle).
