Wish I went to Tuscaloosa for college
What should I be checking out when I come to Tuscaloosa for the first time this September to see the Tide battle against Arkansas?? My dad and I have never been to the campus before, never been to Bryant Denny, and never ever been to the state of Alabama before as I live out in Missouri. Need some ideas on good places to eat, stay, shop for cool Alabama soveniers for the whole weekend. I want to make the most out of my three day weekend while I'm there. I'm finally excited to be part of the home crowd finally after all those years of watching them on tv!!

Welcome to Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama. I know you will enjoy the game and your visit. Some quick ideas to do while on campus:

Friday night there is a riverboat cruise pep rally with the cheerleaders, Big Al, and the MDB pep band. The trip includes snacks, cokes, and beer. It is a blast and sponsored by the local Alumni Chapter and all money raised goes to student scholarships. The cost is $20. It is well worth it. The boat only holds 150 including the band and cheerleaders so it is an intense fun trip. Space is limited but if you are interested but there will be two trips on the Black Warrior River. You can find more information and register for the trip on the University website under Parents' Weekend. Everyone is invited.

Walk the campus and enjoy the history and the beauty. Read the historical markers around campus to get a feel as to why Alabama is so special to those who love the University. The campus is centered around the Quad where Denny Chimes is located. Visit the base of the Chimes to see the cleat and hand prints of all former football captains since 1946. Visit the four buildings (the President's Mansion, the Gorgas House, the Round Guard House, and the Maxwell observatory) that survived the burning of the campus on April 4th, 1864 by union troops. Read the historical marker in front of the Gorgas Library honoring the students who were annihilated when they went out to face the advancing union army to defend the campus. If you are interested in civil rights history, go stand in the door where former Governor Wallace stood in the school house door at Foster Auditorium on June 11, 1963. There is also a gravesite of three former slaves that is very well preserved on the side of the round Biology building. You can view campus maps on the University website.
There are campus tours but the last one on Friday is usually at 2:00 PM. You can arrange a campus tour or simply follow along with one when you see a Capstone man or woman leading one. Look for students in dark grey suits or the girls in crimson suits leading a group. They will be walking backwards talking to the group.

Visit the Bryant Museum to understand our football history. If possible do it Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning, when it would be less crowded -but it will be very crowded. In addition to looking at the exhibits, watch the videos and listen to the broadcast recordings. There is a gift shop inside the museum that has some items found no where else on campus or Tuscaloosa.

Saturday before the game make sure you go to Kick Off on the Quad. It will be the center of all game day activities. Don't miss it. There is some fantastic food at the event. My personal favorite is the Blackened Ribeye Steak sandwich. I eat at least one every game. There will be a pep rally on the Quad right before the game with all the cheerleaders and the MDB. The fun starts early so plan to be there early.

You can visit the original Dreamland BBQ where you can enjoy the atmosphere and ribs. It will be extremely crowded so expect to spend two or three hours waiting and eating. The Waysider for breakfast is also good but once again the experience will take close to two hours. Most anyone can give you directions to both. I would not go there on game day since you would miss too much on campus.

You can find souvenirs on the strip or Bryant Drive. The Supe store on campus in the Ferguson Center has by far the greatest selection. The strip also has numerous bars and grills if you are interested.

Finding a place to stay will be a challenge. Good luck. I am assuming you will have to stay 40 or 50 miles away from campus. Rumor has it this will be a 11 or 11:30 kickoff so you will have to leave by daylight to get to the Quad and the game. Traffic will be terrible so pray there are no accidents to make it worse.

You are going to have a great time on campus and you will love it.
A quick story. Two years ago when we played Oklahoma in Tuscaloosa, two OU grads living in Dallas came to the game with their high school daughter who had attended every OU game with them since she was 5 years old. It was their first visit to the campus. On the way home the daughter informed her parents she wanted to go to Alabama. The dad replied, "I don't blame you honey -I would too!" She is now a junior at the University of Alabama.
This is a special place and I am excited you are going to experience it.

Capstone--I was hoping to pick up some Dreamland Ribs to go. Do they have a special take-out for game days or do you have to wait in line with the rest of the sit-down crowd.

I've eaten there, but never on game day.

If you want your ribs to go at Dreamland, order ahead of time. Call them with your order Wed or Thurs. They have someone to direct you to pick up to go orders

Davefrat,
I agree about the better bbq. I only take people to Dreamland for the experience of visiting the site.
Regarding my ealier post...
As I frequently do, I made a mistake in typing -the date the campus was burnt by the union soldiers was 1865 and not 1864.

If you're going to be there on Friday, drive over the river into Northport and have lunch at City Cafe. Any local can give you directions. Don't let the line out the door scare you away...it moves quickly. Great Southern cooking for around $5 (meat, veggies, cornbread, sweet tea...can't be beat).

I would also recommend checking out The Bryant Museum on Friday rather than on Saturday. It'll be a little less crowded and it won't take you away from all the game day activities on the Quad.

Spend all of Saturday leading up to the game just walking around the campus and appreciating its history and beauty. There will be plenty to do and see to keep you busy. The folks are very hospitable. Make sure to be near the steps of Gorgas library a couple of hours before kick off. The band will make an appearance along with the cheerleaders and Big Al. Then follow them for the Elephant Stomp as they make their way to the stadium. It's a nice way to get in the mood for the game.

Enjoy!

I always enjoy walking along with the band from the quad to the stadium. Get in the stadium early enough to enjoy all the pregame videos and music. I love the sound of "Sweet Home Alabama" over the stadium speakers!!!!!!

Oh............ and definetly hit Archibalds for the ribs!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all this information guys...this is awesome. I knew I could count on you guys. We are definitely looking forward to a great time down there. We'll definitely check out the Bryant Museum, those two rib places (if we are lucky) and check out the gameday experience at the Quad. Can't wait. One more thing....I need a list of hotels that are pretty close to Bryant Denny so we don't have to worry about the long drive and everything.

Your chances of finding a hotel room in Tuscaloosa on a game weekend this late are probably slim and none. Most local hotels require a two night minimum stay on ballgame weekends and most are booked months in advance (even as early as the preceding season). Your best bets would probably be around the Adademy Drive exit in Bessemer (about 40 miles away) or somewhere in Hoover (about 50 miles away). As for specific hotels near campus, the Four Points by Sheraton is on campus; however, that one is permanently booked on game weekends. There is a Hampton Inn at the Campus Drive exit across Highway 82 from campus; however, you can be certain it has long since been booked. Other than those, any other hotel in Tuscaloosa will be at least 2 or 3 miles from the stadium. Most are probably more like 5 miles away. Still, you can bet that they are all already booked. Good Luck and enjoy your trip!

You should also make sure to see the mound on the quad. The mound is the base of a dormatory that was burnt to the ground along with the rest of the campus during the war between the states. And City Cafe in Northport is a great place to get some good ole southern cooking and great service at a very reasonable cost. Enjoy your visit.

I also believe the volleyball team is hosting a tournament if you want to catch that. Friday night they play Indiana, and sometime Saturday before football they play Oklahoma.

A place that my family and I like to eat at every now and then when we are in T-town is, Bob Baumhower's Wings Sports Bar and Grille. It has a great atmosphere, great wings, lots of big screen TV's, and plenty of football memorabilia. Here's the address:

Wings of Tuscaloosa
500 Harper Lee Drive
Tuscaloosa, AL 35404
Telephone: 205-556-5658
