As a retired Air Force contracts attorney, I approve this message: " “I still am a little bit troubled as to why FEMA accepted them. ... They may have stupidly accepted something that was nonconforming.”
That's not the worst. I think Atlantic had one a month or so ago. The guy had his contract, set aside, and then was flying all over the country trying to line up subs. Rented a private jet and stopped in SC to pick up his parents. Insane!

We can debate how effectively the Food Stamp program is run and no doubt it could be more effectively designed and administered but, the irony of passing a huge tax decrease for wealthy corporations while reducing aid to children, is difficult to swallow. It has become the norm for the Trump Administration and the McConnell led Senate. It is appears to be a small matter in the midst of a pandemic but not if you are unsure of where the next meal will come from.

From the National Priorities Project:

The good news is that the United States already has a highly effective federal food program. It’s the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, commonly called food stamps. Every $1 in assistance that a SNAP family receives stimulates up to $1.50 in economic activity, which supports jobs throughout the economy.

Following the Great Recession of 2008, SNAP helped keep 3.9 million people out of poverty, including 1.3 million children. During this pandemic and recession, it remains one of the best tools the government has to keep people’s heads above water while also helping the economy. It’s a win-win.

Unfortunately, the Trump administration has waged war on the program, attempting to push through changes that could see more than five million Americans—including hundreds of thousands of children—removed from the rolls.

Even now, with 40 million Americans newly out of work, the administration is pressing ahead with its efforts to keep families from getting help.

The Heroes Act, the potential fourth relief package passed in mid-May by the House of Representatives, makes each of those improvements. But the Republican-controlled Senate has declared the House bill dead on arrival, and the White House has gone to court seeking to remove more people from the SNAP rolls.

The administration is appealing a judge’s ruling that blocks it from cutting off SNAP benefits from hundreds of thousands of people by imposing new work mandates at a time when there are few jobs to be had. Chief Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., declared in March that these rules were incompatible with the government’s need to address “the nutritional needs of residents and ensure their well-being” during the pandemic.

They have screwed the pooch on supplies, not surprisingly. Pure incompetence and corruption.
With the focus on corruption. How much money did trump and his cronies make when trump ordered the government to stock up on a drug that does not even work. 64 million doses now owned by the government. How much above market do you suppose we paid for that?

The sad part is, he will continue to suggest that the cupboard was bare when he assumed office and then refer to these 64 million doses as a huge triumph against impossible odds. Only he could have achieved such a feat. Besides, he took it for a week and hasn't contracted Corona. There must be a connection. /s

Good luck dealing with a pandemic until we take face mask wearing seriously.
You are correct. I went back to the first mid week service in the last 3 months. There were about 70 people there and less than 10 had on mask. One young man (19) came up to me to shake hand and he did't have on a mask and i talked with his father for a few minutes in the parking lot later and he didn't have a mask on and he is the head deacon. I told him that i wasn't going to fuss about mask and that i wore one as much for other peoples protection as my own and he said maybe he should wear one. i did suggest that either the pastor or deacons speak to the young couple who came with their ONE WEEK OLD BABY and no mask on. i'm very frustrated with the lack of leadership in this situation. since last Sunday the orange county (orlando area) is averaging 193 new cases per day. it's very disheartening,

Trump today: " President Trump called coronavirus testing “overrated” and suggested in a recent Wall Street Journal interview that some people wear masks not as a health precaution but to signal their disapproval of him." That's what you have at the top. He's already killed thousands with his Nero act. Now, with his rallies, he's going to kill thousands more - and he doesn't give a damn, so long as he can get reelected...

I trust little to nothing out of China. I trust little in the pre-publish publishing side. I'm skeptical of peer reviewed published studies now. It's been an absolute poop show on COVID studies. While some should be obvious, even medical professionals are having a difficult time discerning the good from the bad these days. I'm angry at those publishing pure crap and calling it science because it has been very unhelpful from a credibility standpoint.

I'm going to tone down the dramatization here a bit. A lot of viruses (herpes, CMV, etc) show these kinds of pathologic features, and multinucleated giant cells (as we call it in the business) are usually a reactive change that we see pretty frequently in areas of inflammation. Here's a nice picture from a COVID-positive lung biopsy. Panel B shows the multinucleated cells. Panel C shows the kind of changes we see in some other viral infections -- it's the big cell that looks like it has two eyes in the center of the panel (similar to the so-called Owl's Eye nuclei of CMV).

And if you want a (somewhat dry) tour of COVID lung pathology, you can watch the video below. The biggest practical issue is, of course, ARDS, which is source-agnostic (meaning lots of things cause it, as it's just a non-specific inflammatory state that impairs oxygen exchange).

Wanted to double back and thank you for this post. The main point above it was to say that for multiple reasons this is very different from the flu.
