Tide’s Gottfried gets new contract, $200,000 raise
Mark Gottfried now has everything a college basketball coach could want: a new contract, a raise and a strong commitment from the school administration.

The University of Alabama head coach has signed a contract extension that will make him the first basketball coach in UA history to earn $1 million per year. The new six-year deal, which extends his previous contract by two years.

Coach Mark Gottfried Awarded New Contract
University of Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore announced today that head basketball coach Mark Gottfried has signed a new contract that will run through June 30, 2011. The new contract also provided a raise to $1 million a year, making Gottfried the first Alabama basketball coach to reach the million dollar mark.

“I feel this new contract reflects the tremendous progress coach Gottfried has made not only on the basketball court, but in the graduation rates of his student-athletes as well,” Moore said. “The graduation rates and APR (Academic Progress Rate) in men’s basketball was among the very best nationally and that is a very important area to me and Dr. Witt.

Gottfried is UA's highest-paid coach
Gottfried's new salary, which is a $200,000 raise over his old contract, ranks third in the Southeastern Conference among men's basketball coaches behind Kentucky's Tubby Smith ($2.5 million average annually) and Florida's Billy Donovan ($1.7 million).

"He has done a great job," said UA trustee Peter Lowe of Huntsville. "You look at the graduation rate and you talk with the players - they're good people. He is a good coach and good type person."

Good deal, good to know we got him locked up.
Well, the contract is nice, but in this day and age, do you ever really have a coach "locked up"? Nah, contracts are meaningless, except to CMG's bank account.

Well, all we can do is show Coach Gottfried that we have a committment to him. I think the University is (and I think Coach has said this) everything it can do to show the bball program it wants and expects it to be one of the premiere in the country with the renovations to Coleman Coliseum and a nice addition to the coach's contract. Mark has to have a load of respect for Bama with all its done and he will be hard pressed to leave.

Well that really depends on the buy-out clause in the contract.
'tis true, very true. I haven't heard any details on the buyout clause, but undoubtably there is a stiff one. Don't get me wrong, I am pleased at this new deal, but you can just look at the coaching landscape in both football and basketball, but especially football, to show how fickle administrations and fans can be and how much a contract means.
