I posted about getting a virus on my computer that I could not get rid of. That virus emptied my picture and my music file. Don't care about the music file but the picture file had pictures that was priceless. When I told my Wife she cried for a while and to think I was so stupid not to back them up.
Everybody told me they were gone and I can tell you I was really down. One night I just went online and found a program that recovers lost pictures, music, or videos. I can say that every picture that I recover is backup on two external hard drives. With tears in my eyes please backup your computers and also all pictures or videos that cannot be replaced.

Always remember....when it comes to computers:
Just because you can't find it, doesn't mean it's gone
Anyone with a PC needs a good firewall/antivirus program- it's not a luxury, unless you want to go through things like you just did. Not a given that firewall/AV program will 100% guarantee safety, but it will repel all but the most dedicated hackers.
Glad you got your stuff back.

For $60 a year Carbonite is definitely something you should check out. It automatically does backups and sends it offsite to a secure location. It is a good idea to take a pic of everything you own that is worth replacing and store it somewhere other than home. Those pics could come in handy if you ever have a fire or theft at home.

Bitcasa is a new free, cloud based storage system. I've started storing some stuff there, just to test it out. But I keep multiple copies of pictures and videos of my girls both online and on external hard drives. It would be devastating to lose those, as crimson fan man mentions above.

Not saying that there's anything wrong with online backups, but I'd rather not have all my files, pics, etc. sitting somewhere out in cyberspace. I prefer to use an external hard drive that I control myself. Western Digital has a really nice external drive (Mybook - Elements or Essential). It separates pics, music, data, etc. and allows you to backup or restore at your leisure. It costs only about what two months of service from an online backup service such as Carbonite would cost. It uses USB 2.0 connectivity and has a storage capacity of up to 3 TB.
Not trying to sound like a commercial for them, but I like to keep my stuff right here where I can get to it and not have to pay someone else to keep it for me.

If you keep that in a safe deposit box that is cool. My point was you should take pics and copies of all important docs ( insurance polices, etc) and store them someplace other than home. If you home is ever destroyed it will help with the insurance claim. I too have external hard drives for backup, but I also store stuff out in the cloud.

BTW the MyBook USB 3.0 connectors suck. We've had several at work where the connector just broke off.
