Yes he did but keep in mind he could afford to. LSU is (in Ron White's voice) L O A D E D at defensive line and according to many LSU fans he would had a lot of work to do to get on the field anytime soon.

I think in the ultimate end it was probably the best decision for both Davis and LSU. Odds are he wouldn't of touched the field until his Junior year and here he'll be pushing for playing time this season.
