This guy is saying all the right things and positioning himself to be a great leader.

On the fallout that followed his switch from Texas Tech to Alabama: "It's still pretty brutal. I don't think my home state is ever going to accept me again, but that's OK because I think I've found a new home state.
Number McElroy would like to wear at Alabama: "I want to wear 12. One of me and my dad's all-time favorite players is Joe Namath. I know [Earl Alexander] wants it too, and if it comes down to it he can have it. Either 12 or 17 will be fine with me. If it's crimson and white I'll be happy."

I am really excited about his arrival. I was already impressed by his on-the-field performance, but the way he carries himself away from the field is even more impressive. I think we will have a great one in Greg.

I talked to the coaches after Marc [Guillon] went down with the knee injury and they told me that I've got to be ready. Thank God it doesn't appear to be a serious injury, and we've all been praying for him. I'm just going to go in there and battle with the other guys. Even if I don't win the job, I want to at least push my competitors."
I like this kid more everytime I see a quote by him. I know that's just saying the right thing, but it sounds like he's geniuinely coming to make the team better, and not for selfish reasons.

I have a hunch Greg does more than say the right things...he does the right things. He came to a Dallas student recruiting event this spring and his Mother made quite an impression also. Greg is a fine young man and he has been raised well. It will be an asset to the student body whether he ever plays a down of football.

Interesting to compare his comments about 3 quality QB's at UA versus Ryan Per.(SP) at LSU last year. His (Ryan P.) comments were something to the effect that he should be able to start as a freshman because they didn't have any good QB's.

This kid seems to have a lot of class.

My favorite part of his original quote regarding his jersey number was this...

The first time he talked about it, he said that he wanted 12, but knew others did as well and his last comment was "we may have to throw down" to see who gets it.

Frankly, I doubt Alexander will get it because he was not really recruited as a QB but rather an Athlete. Normally, when it comes to numbers like 12 and such the QB would have the first choice over an athlete, but you never know what deal was made during recruiting.

I really do like this kids demeanor and confidence and hope he shows up in June, rather than waiting until August.

Tide Fans: what you see is what you got! Young scholar/athlete McElroy is highly polished both athletically and personally. Those of us that have watched him closely the past few years have been amazed at his progress. Knowledgeable QB watchers believe he hasn't scratched the surface of his potential. He improved w/each game of his 16-game season. He "pitched" about 70% in the final 6-game championship series against 3 nationally ranked teams...and more importantly TX's top division's best. Don't believe anyone has mentioned he rushed for 700+ and 12 TDs to go w/his 56 passing TDs. A class kid from a classy family. He'll represent UA well on/off field. BTW Capstone46 you didn't mention his mother is an easy 15 on anyone's 10 point scale!

I hope all of that translates into big time numbers when/or if he gets behind center. Alabama has always had a good running game. It is almost safe to say that a running game is a given with any Bama team. But from the 90's on up we've lacked in the QB position. Barker was a solid qb backed by a suffocating defense and an admirable running game. He was only asked to manage the game or in present terms "don't screw it up".

It would be nice to be able to start getting guys (at the qb position) that are more than "managers" but are of the mold of "Let me take hold of the reigns and this team and y'all follow my lead". They don't have to throw for 35+ TD's or 3,000 yds but just be able to come up big when you're called upon to do so. In this day and age the passing game is more apart of the offense than ever before. In years past we could get away with not having a good "passer" because the game was mainly a run oriented game. But in the 90's up to today how the game is played has changed.Teams are able to pass just as good as they run. In turn putting points up on the board at a much quicker rate. Brodie Croyle showed flashes of that type of qb. Unfortunately injuries, sanctions and a revolving door in the coach's office hindered him from becoming that complete qb. But it was a step in the right direction. Now it is time to take another step. Hopefully John Parker Wilson can take us to that next level of when defenses step on the field against our offense they have the thought of "If we don't watch it this guy will pick us apart". McElroy would be a good successor.

One thing we've pointed out for the last few months is the general feelings passed on by staff members during REC meetings that they expect GM to compete for the 2 spot next fall.

On the coaching staff's expectations for him this fall: "I think they just want me to go in expecting to play.

This is a rather interesting look at the attitude some have towards McElroy and Alabama...

I included a few quotes but the whole story is here: http://www.fanblogs.com/alabama/006373.php

I am a Tech fan that lives in the DFW area. I think Mccelroy did make a mistake by switching his commitment because tech's offense is very similar to the one he ran in high school. He is still one of the best high school quarterbacks i have seen. He has a very accurate arm and he is a very tough runner. Alabama should be happy to have him and even though i would love him at Tech I wish him the best at Bama. And canes fan..... maybe you should get a decent quarterback before you hate on someone who will be drafted in the second round. I would def take Croyle over Berlin and Wright.

Nice Post Guns up.

For Go Tech: Bama's pass throw ratio under Shula (with healthy QBs) is 50/50...or approximately the ratio found in NFL football. RTR.
