Long way off but what is the chance that we bring a Rivers to T-Town? Can't believe we never even recruited his dad right under our nose in Athens back in the day.

Teaser title. Phillip had no SEC offers IIRC but looking back and with hindsight we sure should have offered him.
Funny you say that. I heard on one of the BOL podcasts this morning that DeBoer was in Fairhope this week recruiting him.

From what I remember, his dad was HC at the High School and there were politics involved. Like, nobody wanted to deal with his dad.
OTOH, I can see why his pops might steer his boy away from the dumpster fire that was our program at the time. Also, to get him to a place he'd be developed for the NFL.
Go retro with recruiting again and ask the same 'Bama-centric question about another Mobilean, Riley Leonard -
Phillip had an uncanny throwing motion and it limited his projection at the next level. Of course everyone was wrong and he turned out to be an all-timer. His son is extremely talented and well beyond his years in understanding qb play. He will be one of the top QB's in the country over the next few years. Would love to see him come to Alabama.
I lived in NC during his playing days and went to many NCSU games. His motion was deeply flawed--but incredibly accurate. I could not believe he made it as a pro with that motion. (Shows how little I knew!) He was offered as an athlete/LB/Safety by both UA and AU...but his father had some serious demands -- employment, play QB, etc., that neither school wanted to be involved with. We'll never know what they gave him, but his father did get a coaching job in the Raleigh area. I don't think PR needs that...
I think some of the dad stuff is a little misconstrued/overhyped. The River's family is an extremely close knit group and they pretty much moved to wherever Phillip moved to. Phillip not being highly sought after by Alabama or Auburn had a lot less to do with his dad being a helicopter parent, and a lot more to do with the coaches of both staff's not thinking he was good enough to play QB for them. QB is a position that is sometimes hard to project. They simply missed on PR. I think it worked out for the best for PR anyways. I'm not sure his career would have played out as it did if he would have signed with either Alabama or Auburn.
The funny thing is that Rivers put NC State on the map almost immediately.
He was a side-armed QB. But he was also 6'4" or 5" IIRC, so he could get away with it. I wished he would have worn Crimson!
Part of this is what I recall. Alabama and the boogs both wanted him but as a Safety or TE.
I think his 4.8-4.9 40 time would not him allow him to play either of those positions.
Jerry Rice reportedly ran a 4.71 , but no one caught him from behind. play Speed is real. Not saying older Rivers ran that well, but 18 yo Phillip Rivers may have been fast enough.
I think anybody that saw Phillip Rivers play college or pro they would say he is not near fast enough to play at safety or TE. And to answer your comment he was not.
Philip Rivers, a former NFL quarterback, said his 40-yard dash time at his N.C. State pro day was between 4.98 and 5.08 seconds. Some say that Rivers wasn't fast enough to outrun defenders.
