Btw - I have a candidate for Auburn.

This candidate:

- knows the importance of standing for the National Anthem before the game
- "loves" the "poorly educated"
- knows next to nothing about actual football
- believes in being "tough" and "strongly" and is opposed to anything he perceives as "weak"
- is a helluva motivational speaker just so long as you let him talk about himself for 3/4 of the speech
- hates "losers"
- will coach without a headset so as not to mess up his hair
- will be ready to come in and take over at noon on January 20

I mean.....he's going to need a job......and Auburn needs a coach.......and........

I think there's another dynamic here, and it's a long-term problem. (I remind you before I say this that I thought Gus needed to go from a purely rational standpoint).

1) Pat Dye finished #3 in his third year and 3 straight SEC titles in a parity era. Auburn was on the verge of being the new #1 when they imploded in 1990 and then got hit broadside by the Ramsey scandal, resulting in Dye jumping off the ship before he was forced to walk the plank. This one is admittedly a bit different.

2) Terry Bowden didn't lose in his first 21 games, finished first his fifth year and nearly won an SEC title and got fired six games into the next season.

3) Tommy Tuberville had a team that went undefeated and would be in a playoff today, had some good years - and one bad year and boom, he was gone.

4) Gene Chizik won a national title his second year and was gone two seasons later.

5) Gus Malzahn came within 12 seconds of a title his rookie year, beat Alabama three times, and he was an 8-4/5 coach each year. Say what you want but unlike his 4 predecessors, he never had a losing season (Bowden's 1-5 would have been a complete one had he stayed).

Now look at all that data: Auburn has earned a reputation as a place that gives you ZERO leeway if you get up the line a little bit and have a rough patch. You get NO CHANCE to correct it. None. All five of those coaches had top five finishes and put some decent teams on the field - and the moment anything went sideways, loyalty did not run the other direction.

Now I don't want to get too lost in the narrative because each situation IS different. Dye HAD to go because of the NCAA. Chizik was expendable because everyone looked at his title as a fluke given his history both prior to and after 2010.

What I AM saying, though, is that Auburn finds themselves where Alabama once found ourselves only it's much worse for them. Every coach wasn't Bryant until Saban was.........and coaches were chewed up and spit out. Auburn, has, in fact done a similar thing but with less hardware to show for it.

I suspect Pat Dye would probably have been given a chance if it had not involved the NCAA investigation. But the others found the hanging party quite quickly.

Of those five hires, only Chizik was a HORRIBLE one that made zero sense. Bowden was admittedly surprising (Dick Sheridan and Pat Sullivan were the front runners). But this hire is making the dog and pony show that hired Chizik look competent by comparison.
Bowden was hired because of his dad’s success at FSU and many believed him to be a great recruiter while at Samford. Terry did not like recruiting, Bobby sent what he did not want to Samford (this coming from a friend of mine whom was a former player) which inflated Terry’s numbers there. AU didn’t look under the rug to see what made Terry great at Samford. Terry wanted to show up on game day and coach without having to do all the other stuff.

I seem to remember there also being some rumors about Terry and a booster's daughter.

Then there is this. (More about Dye than Bowden).

"When Terry Bowden was hired in 1993 to coach Auburn, he was a bright and audacious young (mid-30s) coach eager to make his legendary father proud and make a name for himself.

Everything changed within his first week. An assistant coach from the previous staff, whom Bowden was told he had to retain, walked into his office and placed a black ledger on his desk. It was a list of players who were being paid."

Sounds like they are still doing the same ol stuff. Why else would you keep old staff around and dictate who will be hired and fired. Business as usual down on the plains. "Keep it down home cuz"

Do you think the rumors where coaches like Bill Clark turned Auburn down is true? I get Auburn is going to be hard a job, but you would think someone would suck it up for the money.
"We want you to be the head coach but we're going to tell you how to do your job. Oh, and - just to be clear - that means we'll decide who you can hire and fire as well."

Yep. Sounds just like the Barn to me...

Pomme du Tater Tot Part Deux: The Agony and the Expiation.

Believe that’s the title of his Master’s Thesis for that spankin’ new sheepskin he recently got from Clemps - Masters degree in fambly sports and inoffensive social interaction. Perfect symmetry for what goes around comes back even rounder. Or more rounded as an athletics administrator and coaching rehire...

Further more, Bowden told key faculty members about it, one of which was a mentor and advisor to my late brother when he was completing his Ph.D work at Auburn.

I broached the subject with my brother once, something along the lines of “the audacity to fire your coach and then lay out the cheating plan for the new guy”. My bother replied “you think this started with Dye? He and his cronies just took it to the next level and perfected it. Look at James Brooks and others...”
And trust it when I say many faculty knew it too and wanted to speak out. But when the “godfather” Dye arrived, it was like being in the mafia, especially if you were wanting tenure.
