I used to post on this board years ago and thought I would join in a few game week discussions. Here are my thoughts on the game Saturday:

First, this Hawg offense may be the best Arkansas has had under Houston Nutt! For the swine faithful, it is very surprising since Jones was our ONLY returning starter on offense. Your good friend D. Franchonie recently stated that using returning starters as a predictor of future success is the worst method used by sports analysts (of course this was after they were beaten by Utah). He may be right. Consider: Hawgs #1 in total offense (avg. 525 yds.), #1 in passing offense, and #2 in rushing offense. The difference--better than predicted OL, MUCH better WRs, Matt Jones passing, and Nutt has finally opened up the playbook. You will see a completely different offensive strategy this year from the Hawgs. No more run right, run left, pass or draw on 3rd down. Look for true balance on Saturday.

I don't share the same optimism on the defensive side of the ball. We lost 2-deep at all positions in the secondary. Our LBs are not quite as good as last year. The D-line is the strength of the defense, however, the Texas OL gave us problems. We looked great against New Mexico State, decent against Texas, and bad in the first half on the ULM game.

The key to the game will be Alabama's ability to keep the Arkansas offense off the field. If Alabama establishes the run and controls time of possession it could be long day for the swine faithful. Your new QB will have to be able to complete some passes to keep the chains moving. If Arkansas forces several "3 and outs" this game could get ugly.

My prediction: Arkansas 35, Alabama 21

hummm lets hope your score is not correct, as for getting UGLY? I do not think BAMA is a team you could easily get ugly with. I would say that any team who forces 3 and outs every time would be on their way to the National Championship, and I do not feel that is your Hoggs, sorry. :BigA:

Welcome!

A fair assessment, but here is why I disagree:

Passing Alabama has very young but very solid recievers, they are fast and they make passes.

O-line at Alabama is punishing. Gaps are opened for the run, and there always seems to be an open reciever or two. Keep this in mind, we do not have a "go to guy" on the field to toss the ball to... we sling it all over the place. Rumor has it that a cheerleader made one catch. ;) Plus, we throw a lot of different "looks" at a D, and the teams we have played said that rattled them, seeing the QB step back, recievers streak off, then WHAM... 7 yards up the middle.

Defense The Bama defense runs around like hornets in the backfield, just waiting to sting a reciever or RB. The D-line is solid and is very good at hiding the blitz.

Special Teams Expect to get the ball deep. Often. There are some playmakers on the special teams, and you can almost count on a special team touchdown.

Coaching Nutt has more experience than Shula, but Shula is sling pro-sets at him and they may rattle him until he makes adjustments, and that my friend, is something that worries me. Houston Nutt can make the necessary adjustments and pull out a win even in the most dire situations.

-=-=-=-

This is not a "definate" win for Alabama, but I feel that we have the tools to show a convincing win so long as we stay on our assignments, control the line, and (you're right) keep your offense off the field (or burn you deep a few times).

When a former "directional" LA school...

hangs thirty on you in the first half alone, I think I would be more concerned about my own team. All I can learn from your games is that Texas better be DAMNED concerned... :)

Amen TIDE_HSV!!! If you look close at what is going on in the sec there are alot of teams that are playing sub-par teams and not doing so well. Then they play a sec team and barely get by. Just remember any given Saturday!!!!!!!

ROLL TIDE BABY ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!! :biga:

Tide HSV-Apparently you didn't read my post....and Monroe scored 20pts, not 30. I said I have concerns about our defense. I do think that the loss to Texas had something to do with our poor defensive performance against Monroe in the 1st half--it was challenging for our players to maintain the level of focus/intensity given the quality of opponent we played. I'm sure Bama had challenges maintaining the intensity vs. I-AA Western Carolina. That said, after the 1st half Monroe had like 50yds. The fact remains, no team has stopped our offense--not even close. Take away the turnover margin vs. Texas (4-0) and we win (we had over 450yds of offense).

hawg fan

Listen hear you hawg fan, don't you ever get on this website again and tell me arkansas is gonna beat alabama. Arkansas is gonna be suprised when guillion drops bombs on yalls unexperienced secondary.

my prediction
Alabama-27
Arkansass-14

Welcome to the board HAWG FAN! You give a reasonable assessment, but of course you won't get many on this board to agree with you on the score. ;) I think Nutt will load the box and make Guillon try to beat ya'll with the pass. If he can hit a few early and make the safeties and LBs back off then our running game will benefit. Defensively I think we have to contain Matt Jones. He is one of the better QBs in the league and mobile individuals such as him can create problems for any defense. My first prediction was Bama winning 20-17 but I now see it being a little more high scoring than that, Bama 31-23. Best of luck to ya'll and may the best team win! RTR!

i think this game will be a better gauge of where our teams are headed than our previous games were. Ark and us both have played a couple of nobodys and we've played a weak UM team and they've played a traditional choke artist in UT. i dont know if Tex played down, Ark played up, or if it was somewhere in between.

what i think is that whoevers OFF stays on the field wins. i dont know that we could win a shootout at this point for obvious reasons but i also dont think that the Ark DEF can withstand our RB's if we are able to pound them for 4 quarters successfully. i think if either team gets far enough ahead to force the other into a one-dimensional offense (ie, pass to catch up) then it could get ugly for either team. If Ark can just tee off on Marc without concern of the run things could get dismal but if Jones is forced to launch pass after pass into our secondary then i feel like we win that battle.

should be a good game and a good indicator of where we both stand.

To put it simply...

"The (Bama) offense only needs a field goal." I think that might have been Demeco. Correct me if I am wrong...and I think we all know what he meant by that! ;)

I respect your right to make a prediction, and you may be right about a hawg win, however I don't see anything close to 35-21. It will be close, or BAMA is gonna blow the doors off of that stadium.

It just keeps coming back to me... something about a freshman qb making his first start after the starter went down to an injury the week before... the game was in Fayatteville, I think... Seems like there was an 80 yard td run in there somewhere... Oh yeah, it was just a couple of years ago. What was the score on that one? Wasn't it 30-12? I think so.

Folks, this Alabama team is made up of much more than one player. Even if that one player is a qb with a cannon for an arm. We will be o.k. Marc Guillon said he just wanted a chance when he transferred to BAMA, now he has it. He's got a vastly underrated set of backs behind him; young, fast, receivers on the outside to throw to and a much improved tight end named Clint Johnston. The offensive line is still a concern, but you can bet those guys want to win as much as anybody, and they know what it's gonna take. And the defense hasn't even gotten warmed up yet. This weekend will prove what this BAMA team is made of, just as it did two years ago.

Take away the turnover margin vs. Texas (4-0) and we win (we had over 450yds of offense).

I love those "ignore important facet of game and we win" arguments. I'm not denying that Arkansas is a good team, but you could say "Take away Vince's bad passes and Texas wins by 2 TDs", or "Take away Texas going for it on 4th-and-1 early on, and then they lose", all equally meanginless.

Let's not forget a very important point in regard to preparation. They only have a few minutes of tape on our starting quarterback, and a young, inexperienced set of DBs.
Quick...on third and four, heading into the wind, if the tight-end motions to the weak side of the defense and Guillon takes a five-step drop, where does he tend to throw the ball.
Hmm...I don't know coach. Don't we have anymore tape?

Roll Tide Roll! I think you need to stay on the Hawgs Website.

YOU GUYS NEED TO LIGHTEN UP A LITTLE>>>>>>>

hawg fan has been here before like last year and has never been rude or dis-respectful. He just has an honest opinion and if you look at the stas he is right! Ark is a good offensive team but weak on the d-side. All he said is backed by stats and our stats look just as impressive but alot better on Defense. Since our current problem of the QB this will basically level the field with their not so good D but they are at home and our new QB but a great D its all even and the score is gonna be 0-0 from then on its game time!!! Welcome hawgfan good to hear from you again this year!!

Would he be much of a fan if he came here and predicted that his team would lose? Of course not! Of course he thinks his team will win, just like we do!

It was a fair assessment, and he has reasons to be optimistic, just like we do.

If their offense works as it has, we'll be pushed to produce as well. If our defense works as well as it has, they're gonna have a tough time scoring. Just common sense.

He thinks his offense will work, we think our defense will. That's why we play the game, to find out who's right!

welcome back hawgfan. good assessment. we have two teams that played a preseason schedule, except you played a supposedly strong texas team, and should have won. we have not been tested yet, and the game with arkansas will be real testy. even with brodie this would be a tough game. the key to me is if your defense can rattle marc enough to get him to make bad decisions. i believe if the offensive line blocks well enough to key the hogs off his back, marc would prove to be a fine qb with a good arm. i am sure you will put 8 in the box to make him prove it. plus good formation to blitz from. my major concern with statistics is the only decent team we played is mississippi, and they are very weak this year. i am hoping for a bama win, but all i can say is if the game is less a touchdown with about 3 minutes to go, i hope jones has the ball so he can fumble again, like he has in at least 3 games i am aware of that cost his team a win.

Welcome Hawg fan. I knew when Arkansas was picked just above Miss. State that was a mistake. I don't like your prediction and don't know that your confidence is justified, but you have your way of looking at things just like me. :)

IMO, I'm more scared of Matt Jones than our QB situation. That said, even if Brodie was playing I'd still be scared of Jones and his ability to keep his feet and make a play. Will he ever graduate? ;)

Just a minor correction to the above quote. Demeco said if the D plays the way it should and the way it's supposed to (i.e. "gets the job done") then all Bama will need is a field goal. This is not bulletin board material. It's true of any team, any game, week in and week out. Roll Tide!
