It was a repeat from yesterday of college football live. Herbstreit picked the Barn to win the west but gave no concrete reason why. Sorry I just don't see them coming into BDS and winning this year. Course I could be wrong, but i sure as heck hope not.

I'm not sold on them. I doubt the 3-5 team from last year will really be a threat to win the division. In fact, now that coordinators have more film to study, AUs offense won't be as effective. I'm sure Newton is an improvement, but I doubt he is enough.
And their defense would need vast improvement.

Yeah I think Arky and Auburn will both struggle on defense. I am just not buying the hype on either team. I think they can be improved, but their defenses leave a lot to be desired.
Lol, Ole Miss has a better or at least as good a chance of winning the west than the barn...as does LSU, Arky and Bama. I know their schedule is quite favorable but they still have to play Bama, Arky & LSU if I'm not mistaken three teams with proven offenses & at least in Bama & LSU's case, pretty stout defenses despite our secondary issues...the jury is still out on Arky's defense, much like the barns. At least Arky has a proven offense & qb. I certainly don't see the barn winning the west with their pitiful defense. And did one recruiting class take care of all their depth issues they were having after Tubbs left? Chiziks only been there one year.
Overall, imo, their talent level & depth is still about middle-of-the-pack SEC, based on what I've seen & read, similar to Ole Miss. At least Ole Miss has upgraded their qb, I think Masoli will be quite good for them and he's won games at the college level.
Chizik has won nothing yet other than as an assistant coach under other coaches. He seems he's a decent guy and all but, lets face it, he's not done anything to suggest he's gonna light the conference on fire. There's just nothing there that screams, championship ready for their team.

Assuming the QBs live up to hype they will probably upset someone along the way, maybe even two -- but yes, D will prevent winning the West.
I agree with the poster that said other teams now have one years worth of film. Mack Brown (though I think he's a big cry baby) is changing Texas' offense because he's said that he believes defenses have "caught up" with the spread offense. And I believe he's right. I believe Auburn will struggle on offense as well as defense. What everyone saw last season it was for the first time. This will be their second time around and much of the "gimmick" plays probably want surprise anyone this season. Auburn won't win the west.

no way that happens this year, auburn has too many holes on both sides of th ball. I bet herbstreit was just trying to stir the pot.

I always like to hear Herbie's take on the CFB landscape, and tend to think he is on point with most of his picks, but he seriously needs to put the koolaid down.

I may be in the minority here, but I am growing tired of Herbie. I used to like him a lot, and he does provide some insightful commentary, but he is just another talking head to me now.
He knows this is a controversial pick that will generate lots of chatter (of which I am contributing to) across the internet and talk radio. Wouldn't surprise me if he put this out there as a 'talking point' for the next time he appears on Finebaum.

This has got to be a Herbstreit "gut" pick, as he has no basis for this pick in any other realm. Sure, the barn put up a bunch of points last year, but take away the hurricane that was the WVU game with rain so hard you couldn't see and countless turnovers, and their ppg goes way down (even though it was only high due to the run-ups against OOC teams).
If he thinks Bama won't win it, he must think it's because of our losses on defense; but doesn't he also think, by the same process, that the returnees on offense will be even better?

I like Herbstreit, and I often find that his opinions and mine are pretty close. I do think Auburn will be improved from last year, and they have solid kickers who can be the difference in close games. However, I think the absolute best-case scenario for the Tigers would be 6-2 in SEC play. I really think they will be 4-4 or 5-3 in SEC play, but 6-2 is possible. I am leaning toward Bama being 6-2 or 7-1 in league play this year, but I think our worst-case scenario and their best-case scenario (6-2 for each) would still have us in Atlanta because I think we will beat them head-to-head in Tuscaloosa. Roll Tide!
Of course, it would be nice if we could have a third straight undefeated regular season and remove all doubt. I just don't see it happening with our questions in the kicking game, inexperience in the secondary, and the "purely accidental quirks" in our schedule.

What happened to Bama owning the state once Coach Saban gets everything going? He was the one that said it. Must not believe what he said himself.
Herbstreit knows how to butter his bread. He has succeeded in raising the blood pressure (nice way to avoid an expletive) of all Ark, Ole Miss, LSU, and Bama fans plus giving a ray of hope for Barn fans. This should translate into ratings. Bet he stayed up late to figure that out. Course we (Bama fans) know what is going on in the SEC. "Domination" They need to just get used to it.

1) Their entire offense last year was based upon trick plays. Once the trick play worked, Auburn didn't have very much.
2) They played EIGHT home games last year. And (nobody has mentioned this) their only ROAD WIN was against a mediocre Tennessee team by four points. In their three losses on the road, they lost by 21, 21, and 7.
3) Ben Tate, "the best back in the SEC" (not!), is gone. Obviously replacing the best back in the SEC is pretty much impossible.
4) The "we get no respect" mantra plays well. FOR ONE YEAR. It never works the second year.
5) The play EIGHT HOME GAMES this year as well. But the road games in Oxford and T-Town won't be easy.
Auburn has five wins without even trying.
6) I'm not sold on Gene Chizik. He's a nice enough fella, but when a guy has as bad a record as he did at Iowa State there's a reason for it. I've always thought the hiring of Chizik was done because of the bad economy and on the assumption that Saban will leave Alabama quickly. That way they concede 2 or 3 games to Alabama then hire a new coach and say "Saban's not there." A coach like Chizik comes cheap.
7) The "great recruiting class" should be looked at a little differently. It only makes sense they would get a "great recruiting class" of highly touted players. There's only so many positions at Alabama; you have to wait until you're a junior to start unless you're really spectacular; at Auburn you go to the front of the line.
I think Auburn could easily win 9-10 games with the home cooking and cupcake OOC (Clemson excluded).

I loved this pick. It gets the barners all pumped up and excited only to have their hopes crushed by the mighty Crimson Tide. Plus if it gives our guys any motivation, all the better. RTR
The Smith guy on ESPN college football picked the barn to be #3 in the NATION! when I saw the program this morning.
I like Herby, but remember his roots??? OSU right? Who's the popular pick to challenge Bama in the BCSNCG??? IMO, Herbry's pick of the Barn to the win the SEC West is just wishful/hopeful thinking because he knows the easiest way his Buckeyes get the NC is not having to go through Bama. If I'm right about this, it just further serves as evidence that you can't completely cover up your bias to your favorite team. Reece Davis does it as good as anyone though, but I think Herby is not thinking with his brain on this one, instead he's hoping with his heart.
