How many of you have hit a deer driving down the road? I hit one monday morning going to work. It was a freaking herd of them numbering a least twenty-five or maybe more. It done a good bit of damage to my truck. Has anybody been in this situation?

Mrs. SC and I live at the end of a 2-lane, twisty, rural road that is full of deer. She'***** two (at two different times) when she had a Honda Pilot. The first time was about $600 to the front grille and hood. The 2nd time was about $2k for front fender, driver's door, rear passenger door, & rear quarter panel.

My brother also took out a deer going 70 on I20 in Columbia in a G35 Coupe. Think that was around $2500.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt and have hit none since then.

Yes, they usually travel in packs.

I was driving in Scottsboro one evening when a young deer ran out and slammed into the side of my car. It staggered off the road and into the woods. When we left town the following day, I spotted its body just inside the tree line.

Since it wasn't a head-on collision, there wasn't too much damage...just a slight dent. Sure did freak me out, though.

That's where my mind immediately. His wife: "Oh my God! Did you hit a deer??"

exiled, jr. hit one a couple of years ago. He had locked up his brakes, & was going *very*slow by impact; thus, it only tore up a fender & a quarterpanel. They do *lots* of damage.

My girlfriend got one with her new Ford Excape, dead center on the front grill this winter. Thank goodness she was ok but it was $5,500 worth of damage to the Ford.
At least her son now has a nice set of 8 point antlers to rattle in his tree stand this year.

I drove up on a stag, a doe, a yearling, and a fawn on a two lane road in north Georgia several years ago. I had lost the way to the interstate and was just making my way south. They were ALL in the road and If I had not had my high beams on I'd have hit them all. I practically locked up the brakes and finally stopped about eight feet short while they just stood there.

Saw a guys LTD at work one time right after he hit a deer. Looked more like he'd hit a tree.

My wife had the same thing happen to her, except that it crushed the driver side door.

Been there done that. Outside of Selma in the 1980s. I think the buck had been injured by another car, and wouldn't get out of the road. Crumpled up the passenger door and rear quarter-panel, and left some fur and blood as a reminder.

Not yet--but I have hit other small critters...squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, birds, et cetera. I see them all the time along Highway 6 here in Oxford, inside the city limits. It's only a matter of time for me.

Hit a doe on I65 near Saraland in a new Camaro in 83. She was in a bottom next to the highway apparently and boom she's right in front of me. Got my right front and rolled down the side and mangled it. There was a car beside me in the right lane and I couldn't swerve much.

I hear you. I commute to Batesville & back. In the fall & winter it's like trying to dodge land mines. I haven't hit any out here yet, but I've had to lock the brakes up on numerous occasions. I hit one when I was living in Alabama a few years back. It destroyed my left front headlight, took off my driver side mirror & caved my driver side door in on my old work truck.

Like 666 above, I had a deer hit me.

I was driving and slammed on the brakes and swerved when I saw the deer sprinting toward the road I was on. The deer didn't cause too much damage, but when I wrecked my car trying to avoid him I did about $5,000 damage.

If it hadn't been for a newly installed high curb on the opposite side of the road I would have gone over a step embankment into the woods and it would not have turned out well for me.

My accident occurred in late November which is the general timeframe that most such incidents happen, when the dear are mating and being hunted heavily.

I hit a deer north of Athens near the state line. I was going about 60 and a few crossed the road and were on my right. I was looking at them when Wham another one shattered my driver's side window, glass all in my lap. He messed up my driver's door and rear door. I was lucky his hooves didn't come through the window kicking like crazy. He just jumped at my door trying to cross the road.

After the wreck, the deer was on the side of the road in a bad way with several compound breaks, I didn't know what to do. The guy riding with me hunted a lot, and was pretty redneck...he dispatched the deer with his big pocketknife. He then talked me into putting the deer in my trunk, we dropped it off at a meat processing place. He had it ground up into deer hamburger and ate it all winter.

I know it's illegal to eat road kill, but it was so long ago I don't think they can get me for it. It was a "fresh" kill, and my buddy wanted it, it seemed better than to just leave it for the buzzards.

I have those deer wistles mounted on the front bumper of my car, I bought them at Autozone. My prior job I would drive to work at 6 am and in the winter it was still dark and on my way to work I would drive on the highway and there would be deer all over. I am lucky that I live closer than my prior job and I start later. I hit one back in 1990 with a Nissan Sentra and it damaged my driver side fender and I couldn't hardly open my driver side door. When I stopped, the deer ran away like nothing even happened. That was scary.

Me too, just north of Selma on 219. Unfotunately I was driving a 12 year old truck and it got totaled. I'd still be driving it, and not making a car payment, if not for that.

Funny story. I found a .45 caliber hollow point bullet in my truck a couple days after this. Since I don't own a .45, I have to figure it came from the trooper's shirt pocket, which of course made me think of Barney Fife, etc., etc.

DISCLAIMER: The trooper was extremely cordial and professional.
