Holes to fill?

So, who do we lose off of this year's team?

Gregory, Reaves, Dugas, Booth, Kelton, Rosecrans? Anyone else?

What position will Cole wind up playing? 3rd?

Do we have anyone on the roster now who can play short?

What do we do with Baxter and Carlisle?

With Moore and the young pitchers we have a good core group. Roberts is solid defensively. Smith needs to be pencilled in at first and left the heck alone. Other than that there seems to be way too many holes to fill for a team struggling the way we have this year. Usually it's youth that causes you problems, but not with this team and the way they have hit the last couple of years.

Booth is listed as just a JR so we'll have him for another year. The SRs on this years team are Dugas, Gregory, Reaves, Kelton, Rosecrans, Tullidge, Zylstra, Kennedy (the last two have been non-existent this year)

I wonder if Moore can handle CF? He seems to have pretty good speed to cover ground. The toughest thing to replace about Dugas will be as a leadoff hitter though. I don't really see another one on the team either unless one of the true freshman that we haven't seen much of can handle it. Maybe one of the signees, like Georgie Salem (Emeel was a pretty good leadoff hitter, maybe it's in the blood), can come in and handle that spot.

Right now there's not anybody I would pencil in at SS, but we have a signee, Mikey White, who is thought highly of by ESPN (http://espn.go.com/high-school/baseball/recruiting/player/_/id/145472/mikey-white). But we also have Zach Edel and Chazz Otwell listed as infielders, so maybe? I haven't seen them play at all, so who knows.

Incoming Matthew Goodson is supposed to be a solid player, last I saw he was in the top 150 or so players in Allan Simpson's list. Of course the big question with these signees, as it always is, is which of them make it past the draft.

Let me guess he was "a pretty smart kid too". He speaks like 3 languages! ;)

Salem was the real deal, brains and baseball ability. If his younger brother is anything like him, put out there and let him go! ES was one of my all time favorites as is Dugas. Both are high end college center fielders. May not pan out in the pros, but they will get there pay day and then have an education to fall back on, setting them up for life. Basically what getting a college scholarship is all about.

I think Georgie Salem will be the CF, Mikey White will be the SS, Kyle Overstreet will have every chance in the world to beat out Roberts at 2B and Mathew Goodson could very well be the LF. As amped up as Dax was about AJ Cole's signing, we NEED Cole to be the 3B

Ideally
C - Booth (because you know he's not going anywhere) - but note JUCO signee Wade Wass is currently hitting .442 at Meridian Miss. CC with 19, yes 19 home runs!
1B - Smith
2B - Roberts/Overstreet
3B - Cole
SS - White
LF - Goodson
CF - Salem
RF - Moore
DH - ??

Of course, I haven't been to look at the Shelton State baseball site for guys from Tuscaloosa County who are currently hitting .250 or worse that could walk on and earn a starting spot!

(EDITED To add Ben Moore to RF)

That last bit about SS is priceless, I must admit I lol(ed) on that on!

So you've got Moore going from a big-time contributor this year to not even in the starting 9 next?

The starting job at catcher should be Moore's to lose, but knowing this staff, he'll likely split time with Booth and see action in the outfield again. Booth will need to show some progress at the plate, where his occasional flashes of power are obscured by an extremely poor average and OBP. Improving his receiving is also a must for Booth, as he is currently one off the SEC lead in passed balls (7) despite having only 18 starts behind the plate. Wade Wass has put up some monster numbers at Meridian CC, but he looks like a bat-first type whose main job is to mash. Of course, look no further than his former teammate Kenny Roberts for proof that junior college stats should be taken with a grain of salt when projecting future success.

Start Smith at first base from day one and leave him alone. Roberts has been steady defensively at the keystone, but his massive contact problems could prevent him from ever being much of a contributor with the bat. He'll need to learn to shorten up his swing and improve his pitch recognition skills. On paper, Mikey White appears to be the heir apparent at shortstop, but we were saying the same thing about Cole and third prior to this season. The hot corner should belong to Cole, provided he returns.

Both Goodson and Salem have the potential to be stellar defensive outfielders, as both have well above-average range and arm strength. When it comes to Miller, there's no way to tell what this staff will do. At this point, he appears to have been written off, for the most part. I can't say that I'd blame him if he chose to play his senior year elsewhere. Baxter remains very rough around the edges in all aspects of his game, as an outfielder, hitter, and pitcher; he's got a ton of work to do before he can be considered a reliable option. Carlisle has played sparingly, but could see action on an outfield corner.

Even with losing solid players like Dugas and Reaves it makes me feel better reading about these new guys. Makes me believe there is some hope.

when it comes to this staff , seeing what they have done ,why would you want to play here. has anyone noticed how most all of our hitters are swinging straght down on the ball (just like they are told to ). the thing that really chaps me is the way some of these kids are treated by the coaches when they do exactly what is asked of them ,get pulled out, then some of the chosen ones screw up regular and get patted on the back ,NEVER pulled from a game. i am willing to bet that if some of the ones that have been benched were to get 50 - 75 straght at bats without a coach jumping his behind , let them swing like they swung to get here , i will bet they could hit .300 easy.

sorry guys, I've made some idiotic posts on this site but not many that compare to leaving Moore off a starting 9 for next year. Just now saw this and edited my previous post.

it could also have Moore at C, Booth at 3B and a ??? in RF

Yes its been obvious for 2 yeas now the coaches have clear favorites. They make an error or take a third strike with guys in scoring position and they get pat on the back. A non-favorite makes the same mistake and they sit on the pine. That just displays the immaturity of this staff. They need to grow up this isn't Jr High. There are some good players not getting on the field. I don't have a dog in this fight, I just want the best on the field, regardless.

Ball , you are right. how many errors and k's does booth have without ever having to come out.tullidge has solidified himself at 3rd . moore has to be in the lineup but booth and roberts may need to come out if they plan on helping the team.
