I wouldn't stay in or anywhere near downtown Atlanta, PERIOD! Not unless A) You wanna risk the possibility of losing your life. B) You wanna risk having your car stolen or vandalized while in the parking lot ("security" at the hotels are a bust). C) You wanna risk being mugged by some ghettofied thug.

I hate Atlanta for the very reason knowing it's a shame good people have to suffer at hands of some sinister criminal.

I'd stay in Peachtree City if I were you. It's the closing thing to sanity in that whacked out part of Georgia.

Just an option to throw out there. If you're looking for a safe place away from the hustle and bustle, but can get to the game fairly quick, you might want to look at....

Extended Stay Deluxe Hotel Lenox North
3967 Peachtree Rd NE
Atlanta, GA 30319

It's right by the Brookhaven-Oglethorpe Marta station and is just east of Buckhead in Brookhaven. I saw a lot of orange coming out of that hotel the other day going to the Marta station. I would imagine it's probably a 15-20 ride down to the dome from there. I usually wouldn't recommend Marta, but on big game days/nights, safety in numbers.

I totally disagree. I live in Grant Park (between Turner Field and the Zoo) and can see downtown from my front porch. My wife and I go into Downtown all the time and have never had a problem.

I would recommend staying downtown if you can find a place. The Days Inn isn't the greatest but it will work. There is also a Holiday Inn right next to Centennial Park that may be an option.

If you're going with kids and can find a room, the Embassy Suites is the best bet. Its literally next to the Aquarium (which is a MUST-SEE for anyone who hasn't been -simply amazing) and has a great breakfast. Plus each room is essentially two bedrooms giving you some privacy.

There are also a couple of boutique hotels that are new to downtown. Not sure how old your kids are but these properties are often missed by the big search engines and may go unbooked.

But here's the super-secret method I use constantly for business and personal travel. Book a hotel room with no cancellation charges or pre-payment as a "fallback" plan. Then, the week prior to the event, start using Priceline to find a 4- or 5-star hotel for the price of your "fallback" hotel.

But definitely stay in Downtown if you can or Midtown. I would agree with the earlier advice to avoid Lennox/Buckhead unless you're going to stay at the Ritz (and even then the Downtown Ritz is just as good!).

dude, you need to get out more. maybe you should try the clermont, i think it would change your perspective on atlanta. they specialize in southern hospitality

i have lived for 15 yrs in atlanta, most of that ITP (one stint downtown, one in brookhaven, and now in east point). i have ridden marta from the southside (i guess that would be the ghettofied side to you ;) ) into midtown every day for the past three years and never have problems.

I lived in Atlanta for 18 years and visited downtown frequently and never had a problem. Like any big city there are thugs around so just don't wander out alone at night and you'll be ok. Heck, I lived temporarily in Birmingham for a year and that's where I had my credit cards and identity stolen. Took me over two years to get the mess cleared up. By the way, Peachtree City is like a light year away from downtown Atlanta so, unless you like driving, stay as close to the city as you are comfortable with. There are also a lot of nice hotels near the perimeter, primarily on the northside that offer great weekend rates so you might try that if you are not comfortable with staying downtown.

Be careful with Extended Stays. We had a room booked in Nashville just blocks from the stadium. When we got there, the woman at the front desk said some guests decided to "extend" their stay so we had to stay some place else b/c our room was given to them. This happened to several other Bama fans. Luckily the manager paid for our room but it was 10 miles away.

If it was me I would stay downtown area close to the dome and walk or take a cab. Downtown is'nt a bad place when events are going on. Do not stay in Buckhead. It is just as espensive and seems to be turning bad. I'd feel safer downtown more than Buckhead. I live in Douglasville and I will probably get a room downtown that night to keep from driving home after we celebrate our first win of the season with my fellow tiders.....

I live in ATL and work in a major hotel downtown. Downtown is definitely more convenient to the dome and there would be lots of fans there. But for restaurants and nightlife, definitely stay in midtown or Buckhead.

Where do you get that Buckhead is "turning bad"? If anything, it's turning good. Tons of high end restaurants and shops being put in new high rises by the day. They've bull dozed the once sketchy club areas near ESPN zone to build such developments. It's very very pricey, but definitely now one of the safest parts of town.

as a rule, Days Inns are never good options, ever
LOL. Not unless you're looking for a drug deal and are packing your "piece." I belong to the Choice reward card group. They don't advertise it, but, if there's a waiting list, and you belong, I'll guarantee you that'll be moved up the list...

I have lived in Atlanta for almost 5 years and go downtown often and have never witnessed any of the things mentioned above.

I was wondering about that myself. I get to Atlanta several time a year for Braves games and I always stay in Buckhead. Usually around the Lennox mall somewhere. I was always under the impression it was one of the safer areas to stay in in the city. Always been a good experience for me anyway.
