I see Jim Barnes continually be accurate as he was in the All-American Game. His footwork is awful, but he sure can put the ball on the money. I saw he went like 3 for 3 but how is he looking?

he's actually lost 20+ lbs I believe and he looks a lot better. His footwork isn't horrible, but it ain't great either. In the 2nd scrimmage, he lead the first TD drive of the day. He looks pretty accurate as a passer. But, a big disclaimer, like all freshmen QBs, he still needs a lot of work. We'll see how he looks after a RS year spent with Johnston.

Man, give the kid a break...he's lost like 20 pounds and he looks trim compared to what he looked like here in Los Angeles....

He's a keeper

He looked good in Crimson. It looks like he is thought to be the # 4 QB behind Croyle and Wilson/Gullion (tied for 2nd.) He was Barnes 3 for 3 for 8 yards in the scrimmage. You can see him throw one of his passes in the scrimmage video below.

No backup yet for QB Croyle
Alabama coach Mike Shula still isn't ready to name a backup quarterback to Brodie Croyle.

Freshman John Parker Wilson has been "ahead," according to offensive coordinator Dave Rader, all camp. But junior Marc Guillon was 4-of-9 passing in Tuesday's scrimmage for 40 yards and two touchdowns, while Wilson was 1-of-6 for minus-1 yard.

"We haven't made any decisions there," Shula said. "I thought Marc had a real good day (Tuesday). He had a couple of missed throws, but for the most part he had some big plays, made some good reads and got the ball out quick."

i want to like barnes, but i just cant get past all of his quirky motions. his mechanics are pretty bad, and he just moves funny. if you compare his drops and release to JPW, barnes looks like he has no idea how to play QB. JPW has the best looking mechanics of all the QBs IMO. other than that, i guess he is okay.

Isn't Barnes relatively new to the QB position anyway? I mean, I seem to recall reading somewhere that he only started playing football his junior year in high school.

Or did I dream that?

I went to the scrimmage tuesday, and it was the first time I have seen him. His throwing style looks abit unorthodox. He raises that arm high in the air before he delivers the ball. I heard the comment from behind me that he looks and plays alot like Gino Torreta, and I kind of see a resemblance there. (He tripped over the lt guards foot on one play and fell backward, that kind of reminded me of Gino in the Sugar Bowl.)He looked like a freshman, he's not quite there yet, but that doesn't mean he won't get there, everyone just needs to let him go through his growing pains and learn for himself what it takes to be a divsion 1 QB. In saying, that I think a red shirt would be good for him this year, alot like a year off was good for JPW.

JB will be a star with us.

He needs to change some of his weight and/or gain some muscle.

Big deal, he will be fine come next year. It happens to almost all freshman

This is going to sound twisted but I think the mono helped him lose some of his weight. It usually fatigues you and i thought he looked good when he made that drive in the 2nd scrimmage. He does look a lil goofy and I think the spirals on his passes are a lil loose, but I think he has the gun to run a shotgun formation really well and he has nice touch IMO. I think he will be a guy that is going to try to get pt but if we get a stud qb recruit next year and JPW and MG (I assume he still has eligibility next year) fighting for the starting position and even JJ getting in the mix, its going to be tough for him. If we get either Earle Alexander (although a WR prospect that wants to get his Qb chance just like JJ), Chris Smelley or Tim Tebow JB finding himself in starting qb spot in the next few years might be really really tough. Not that he doesnt have the ability. i think our recruiting might cause some attrition somewhere down the road. Let me know what y'all think of my scenario.

I think in fall camp he's shown he has the ability or they wouldn't be wasting reps on him, but I think its clear that barring a disaster he's headed for a redshirt, But his size gives him an advantage the other QB's don't have. Remember Dan Marino never had great foot work either, a pure pocket QB doesn't need footwork, his weapons are his mind, and his arm.

If we get to a point where we have QBs transferring out to get PT because they are good enough to play elsewhere but just can't move up the depth chart at Bama, it will be a definite sign that Shula is getting the job done, IMO.

Getting the job done on the recruiting front, at the very least.

I sure hope the young man does not read this board or Tiderinsider, over there he has been called Goofy Looking and everything else.
I know Coach Shula did not waste a scholarship on this guy, he will be good in time. Lets lay off his weight for now.

I have to admit his throwing style and his footwork is a little unorthodox, but I can think of several very successful quarterbacks who had similiar styles or unorthodox styles that excelled at the quarterback position.

1) Bernie Kosar-Sidearm throwing motion, very slow, but he had a rocket arm and was extremely accurate.

2) Dan Marino-Very slow of foot, unorthodox throwing motion, but he had an extremely quick release and was very accurate.

3) Gino Torreta-Very slow, great pocket passer who could pick a defense apart, except the 92' Bama defense of course.

4) Danny Wuerful-Not a tremendous athlete, but possibly the most accurate passer I've ever seen in college football. Won heisman trophy and national championship at Florida.

5) Jay Barker-Not unorthodox, but was pretty slow and clearly was not a great athlete, but he had leadership ability and just plain won football games, didn't make big mistakes.

My point is: We won't know how good Barnes can be until we see him on the field. I saw him play in the Army All Star game, and although he didn't look like your typical quarterback, I was very impressed by how he performed in the All-Star game. Some of that may have to do with the fact that his father was the coach and he knew the system, but he still put the ball on the money every time. I'm excited to see what he can do for us down the road.

Anyone ever hear of Phillip Rivers? He has one of the more unorthodox throwing styles I have ever seen. He turned out to be a pretty good college QB and is developing into a good pro QB.

I see Barnes as fitting in really well with Shula's system. Barnes is a pocket passer who is not going to scramble much. By next year I look for him to give the other QB's a challenge. I am glad he is on our team.
