How do we treat opposing fans at our place?

So, I was lifting this morning in the gym. We have a decent group of SEC homers at our club that pretty well outnumber the UT and A&M fans (soon to be SEC homers). Anyway, the LSU fans got on a Tiger Bait firestorm with this poor Aubie that had the nerve to wear his Aubie shirt today. The Aubie kinda got offended and I really wanted to jump in and help the poor dude out with some trash talk about LSU's dope smoking football players but I figure I am up next and I love seeing an Aubie get upset.... I told the guy as we were leaving that you probably should steer clear of Death Valley if that bothered you and he said he has never considered going to BR for a game, even when he was at Auburn.

As I drove into work afterwards, I wondered how we treated opposing fans in public, especially at BDS. We really don't have a name like Tiger Bait or Gator Bait to drop on an opposing fan as they walk by. I guess there is Roll Tide, but that is pretty much a greeting amongst ourselves. Then, what is our reputation towards other fans when they come to our place? Are they nervous? Are the Vols that actually make it to T-town for the game tomorrow going to worry about our fans dogging them out (and not by some drunk fraternity clown)? LSU, Georgia, and the Swamp have these horror stories of the home team fans stricking fear in any opposing fans that dare to show up just by being loud and obnoxious. I can actually speak from experience about the Corn Dogs place and the Swamp? They do get loud and carried away. What are ya'lls thoughts on our reputation around the SEC?

I don't say anything to them. Don't feel like getting worked up over what the opposing fans say with their homer comments. I guess we could thank them for traveling through the state and supporting our economy.

With respect I hope. We know we are going to win at BDS so no reason to engage in any trash talk. Heck most are our SEC brothers with Awebarn excluded :biggrin2:

Myself and family had a good experience at b.d.s when we went there back in 07. Of course there was some trash talk especially at the end of the game on our way out. However for the most part most of tide fans we encountered were very hospitable.

In 1990 I participated in a standing ovation at BDS when PSU took the field for the final game of the 10 year series. Doubt if it gets any nicer than that.

In the stadium, I just pretty much ignore them and watch the game. I don't really care what they do or think. Around campus on game day, I think of it as and try to treat opposing fans as a guest in my home, which the University sort of is.

It's, um, easier with some fans than others, and an obnoxious drunk talking smack I'll just ignore. But over the years my experiences have been mostly very positive with visiting fans. I always welcome civil conversation with knowledgeable college football fans. In particular I saw a lot of this with Penn State last year. Arkansas this year was sort of hit and miss, some that would talk, some that just wanted to scream sooie at you -- they were a lot quieter on the bus back to the soccer lot than on the way in. The LSWhos come in a wide variety. A few times they have screamed "tigerbait" at me, and then turned out to be some genuinely nice people. You have to make some allowances for wardrobe, of course. Mississippi has its own deserved reputation for hospitality and usually its fans aren't obnoxious. The Barn is a whole different set of issues. Harder to ignore people who are your relatives. UGA fans are hard to deal with in Athens, but better behaved on the road. Many Tennessee fans are about as serious as we are about football and will talk players, history and xs and os, just wear sunglasses so that color doesn't burn your retinas. I can't recall ever actually having talked to a Vandy or South Carolina fan. Kentucky fans try hard but all end up talking basketball at some point....

I think to always be hospitable and show class....before and after the game....that is the best.
Of course...destroy them on the field.
BDS should be as loud as anywhere during the game.

Being a class act, for me, is understanding that our own self-worth and our rivals' self-worth is not directly tied to how the team did on the field.

It's one thing to say, "We'll have your guys on the ropes by the end of the half."
Quite another to say, "You're pulling for who? You're one sorry sack of ____."

Just my humble opinion. Or, as they say on the Internet, JMHO. :)

My philosophy is to treat all fans with respect. The one exception is the barners. I have no respect for anyone who will support a team that dishonest.

Who was it that trashed our buldings bathrooms in 2007? I recall after a particular game, all bathrooms were locked down and the portajohns arrived.

It was Georgia in 2007 that left a ridiculous amount of trash in the areas where they tailgated. There was one whole area on the quad that was the most disgusting pig pile of trash I've ever seen after a group of visiting fans left. I was appalled.

My wife is a gator fan so I will tell you what she told me. We went to the swamp a few weeks ago and I was not treated well by the surrounding gator fans. She even had one fan tell her that she must have a rough time at home due to the fact that I am a BAMA fan. Well my wife and I have a terrific marriage and are set to celebrate our 29th anniversary in about 3 weeks so she did not appreciate the accusation against me. She told the obnoxious gator that we had a great marriage and that there was nothing wrong with me pulling for BAMA.

Toward the end of the game, she looked at me and said something like, "I'll be honest with you. The BAMA fans in Tuscaloosa treated me much better than the gator fans treated you tonight. The BAMA fans were very classy. I do not appreciate how the gator fans treated you. BAMA fans are nicer than gator fans."

Every school has its obnoxious fans and unfortunately I was surrounded by many of them at the swamp. Because we were sitting on the 40-yard line in a section where some big donors usually sit, you would think that the behavior would have been better but it was not. In fact, about the only people around me who treated me well were teenagers (15-18 year-olds). Most of the adult gator fans around us should be ashamed of their behavior. That behavior did not go unnoticed by my gator fan wife.

UF didn't win consistently until the '90s. except for the Pell regime, and they paid for that. In '63-'64, I was in graduate law school at NYU. The largest contingent of students was from Bama. The second largest was from UF. Worse, we weren't just going to class together; the school had housed us all in an apartment house on the west side of Washington Square - IOW, no escape. That year, UF lucked up and beat us. I've truly never, ever, seen a more obnoxious fan base in my life. I've really seen nothing with the modern version to change my mind...
