How Many Thought Coach Stallings Was A Bad Choice?

For the record what I thought about HC hirings at the time they were announced not with the benefit of looking back:

Perkins good hire
Curry good hire
Stallings bad hire
Dubose good hire
Franchione bad hire
Price bad hire
Shula good hire

My record is about like Mal's. This is not a easly job to hire a new HC especially for a program like Alabama.

I certainly did.
Stallings, however, was CEO-smart enough to realize that you surround yourself with outstanding support. He had great assistant coaches that he could trust to competently do their jobs.

If only Mike Shula could have done the same thing.

I did not like the Stallings hire when I first heard about it. Then we lost the first three games under Stallings and I was sure I was right in my initial assessment. But it didn't take long for CGS to recognize the problems and fix them. And I was proven wrong.

When Coach Stallings was hired, I really just shrugged. I didn't understand why then, because I was still trying to figure out who pulled the strings to get rid of Curry. I couldn't comprehend having had three coaches since Coach Bryant!! Now, we're on something like #27 or something, and it's still mind-boggling. I was a student at UA when Stallings was winning all those games, and my last year was DuBose's first. Talk about a difference. Here is what I thought of all the hires/fires since I can remember back that far...

Curry- Bad Hire/Worse Fire
Stallings- Bad Hire/bad retire (wink, wink)
DuBose- Great hire!(what an idiot I was)/Good fire
Franchione- We settled/ripped out our heart
Price-Good hire/terrible separation
Shula-Bad hire/so far, terrible separation....

What I'm saying is that we are running in circles here. And I blame the BOT and Mal Moore for every single bit of it all.

Thunder, you are either too young to really remember what all happened with Coach Stallings or you're having a "senior moment". Coach Stallings was a great coach. He had Coach Bryant's blessing and was THE coach that Coach Bryant recommended to be his successor but for a variety of reasons didn't work out at the time.

Yes, he had a losing record at the time he was hired but holy cow, look where he coached at:

TAMU-at the time admitted only men, which makes it tough to recruit to and it's out in the middle of nowhere AND at the time, they were Univ. of Texas whipping boy.

Arizona Cardinals-maybe the sorriest NFL franchise in the league, grossly mismanaged.

All he did when he came to Alabama was unite a badly fractured family, instilled some discipline, recruited well, played no nonsense, hard nosed football and averaged 10 wins per season and won a NC.

Also, to blame the probation on him is completely INACCURATE and displays a lack of knowledge of the situation.

I sould be happy to accept the "too young" part, but the fact is, I'm not old, but I have been here a LOOONGGGGG time.

I probably do have a lack of knowledge on the "whole truth" of the probation situation and may well be completely inaccurate on it.

What I do know though-
back in 1982 Coach Bryant as AD and HC had FULL and TOTAL control of the football program at Bama.
For years he had been a mover and shaker,
he got things done,
he set up bowl games he wasn't even involved in.
He got coaching jobs for many a coach, assistant and head, at schools where he had little or no connection.
If he wanted a man, he got him.

If Bryant had wanted Stallings to follow him,
he would have made a deal with the Cowboys and Landry that made the Cowboy orginization happy,
Landry happy,
Stallings happy,
Bama happy,
and Bryant happy.

But Bryant knew the personality that would be required to be the "man that followed the Bear".

In October of 82 the NFL was in a players strike,
at Paul Snow in Jacksonville Alabama at a Gamecocks game,
the head coach of the New York Giants was introduced to the crowd.
I looked around the press box at Ray Perkins, he was there with an offer to our Gamecock head coach Jim Fuller to be his O-line coach at Bama.

I don't know how long before that it was "done",
but Perk, as the "man to follow the Bear" was a done deal in October 82,
he was already putting his staff together, during the season.

Fuller didn't take that first offer, stayed on at JSU another year,
he did take the offer the second time it was offered.
(we won't get into the pros and cons of that for Bama, and JSU, in this thread)
Old Jim is now back with us at JSU as AD.
(I really do have the inside info on this one)

Bryant could have had anyone he wanted,
he wanted, and got, Perk.

And it is historical fact that Hootie hired most of the staff before hiring Stallings as HC.
Hootie surrounded Stallings with great coaches.
Stallings did bring Mal in.
Then Hootie put Homer Smith in later on, on top of Mal.
Gene certainly didn't get the use out of Homer that Curry did.

I remember a Barner joking at me in 92 that the biggest mismatch in college football was Bama's O vs. Bama's D at practice.

Well, if it's a "historical fact" that Hootie hired the assistants prior to Gene Stallings being hired, I guess you won't have much trouble finding a link to this "fact". So, where's the link?

Can't tell you how many times I heard this joke living in Chattanooga.

Q: What do the Pope and Coach Stallings have in common?

A: They were both once Cardinals and don't know "crap" about football.

I cleaned it up.

I thought Stallings was a shaky coach to hire at first, then he lost his first three games, but after that I was completely satisfied. Why don't we just go offer him because that will make everyone happy and we will be good.

I was daydreaming today and thought I might write some of it down for your enjoyment/amusement/annoyment:

Bama fans are up in arms about the state of the program. Auburn has just won "One for the Thumb." Fans are calling for Shula's head. Witt and/or Moore (maybe independently, maybe separately) realize that a change is inevitable.

Moore approaches some former coaches/players discreetly. One of these is Stallings. Moore asks Stallings if he would come to UA's rescue if worst came to worst. Stallings tells Moore "yes," but that Shula should get 1 more year. Moore says "thanks" and moves on. Moore now has a "proven head coach" and "proven winner" in the bag, and some Bama fans would welcome the return of Bebes as the rejoining of what Bockrath separated, if only for a year or two.

Moore can now go forward looking for a big name/hot name coach with the assurance that Stallings will step up if the search "fails." Moore is probably certain that Stallings would keep Kines and most of the existing staff, plus Moore can affect hiring a top OC and OL coach (the two names mentioned w/NCs on resume??).

It's a daydream, but what do you think?

I was preparing to PCS from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba when my CDR came into my office and said "Chief, I have some information you might like". I responded what will it cost. She said a rack of your famous ribs. I said "let'er rip and it better be good. She said your new coach is some guy name Gene Stallings. I got her those ribs and baked beans. Coach Stallings was Coach Bryant choice as his successor. I was very pleased. Funny, Coach Bryant knew who should have replaced him.

I was 13 so I didn't care one bit. I pulled for Bama no matter who was coach. Man, I wish I had that carefree spirit today. This is driving me nuts, but I have faith that Bama is about to see a breakaway run with nothing but green and victory ahead of us!!!! Roll Damn Tide!!!
