beyond all the things mentioned in the article, I have questions about how he became academically eligible to go to OSU given all the moves and drama.

With all that money coming in, he could probably pay for the grades.

The brands pay to sponsor it to try to make an impression on the athletes who might sign with them in a few years. Teams pay to attend for the exposure (I assume). Any others but parents who are paying to watch ... are idiots.

And the thing with the travel sports, people buy in to it because these days they have to in order to have the chance to try and play for their local HS. If you haven’t played a travel version of your sport then in most cases the HS coach ain’t looking at you at all. My kids HS baseball team makes you fill out a questionnaire and list who you have played for and they have in the past went and found the coach and asked about the kid as part of the evaluation. The kids get a one day tryout and the team is mostly picked because of what is discovered outside of the school.
