Huygens lands successfully

I agree. I've always found interplanetary exploration fascinating. Ever since I was a kid I've always wondered how human beings can waste their time thinking hateful thoughts about other human beings, when there is such a vast and amazing universe to explore.

Please excuse my kumbaya moment, but news like this always gets me in that mood. The fact that it was a multinational mission just gets me even more mushy.

This calls for a Shatner moment.

For unknown reasons, NASA, which operates Cassini, the satellite orbiting Saturn that relayed Huygens' signal, removed an image of Titan's surface from its Web site. ESA had not released that image. No official information was available about the image from Titan's surface.

From http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/space/01/14/huygens.titan/index.html ... Now, did they find E.T. or something... the plot thickens

This is a huge step for the Euro space agency.

This is just too cool.

Yet more proof that when we set aside out differences and work together, we can achieve greatness.

Most of their recent probes have crashed and/or stopped working.

I saw a program last night on Discovery where they interviewed some of the scientists, many of whom had been working on this for 13 years.

Could you imagine working that much on a project and having it just go belly-up on you? I'm sure they are breathing a sigh of relief now, knowing the ESA's past history of failure.
