The thing I noticed at this game about the band was some of the band were at the corner of the endzone playing Yea Alabama everytime a group of players came out of the tunnel to warm up before the game.I wish they would do that before every home game.

MY wife(who is a music teacher) who loves the band, says there is something wrong with this years edition of the MDB. She doesn't say what, but there is something wrong, this comes from a music teacher of 35 years.
The band is good, but it is not the same in years past.
The band needs to improve just as the football has.

I actually really liked the halftime shows at both games this year. I have also noticed the band playing some new songs while the game is underway. Under Scott it always seemed to me that the shows were all the same.

Under Scott they had a different show every other week.

It's obvious we are going to have to agree to disagree. The heart of the matter is that Ms. Scott and Dr. Ozzello have different styles. Ms. Scott preferred noise and props whereas Dr. Ozzello focuses on the marching aspect. It's a dog and pony show versus a drum corp style. I marched under Ms. Scott from '94-'98 and every year we did three shows, which is what the band is doing this year under Dr. Ozzello. I'm obviously biased on this issue but I always appreciate the band's efforts both during halftime and the game. RTR!

UA fan and RollTide922...

GREAT posts! This is supposed to be an open forum amongst "brethren" (all of us, included the womenfolk, too, of course!) where we are FREE to share opinions, and still be within "family". I have seen the personal attacks escalate to childlike name calling on more than one occasion over the years when people disagree with other folks---WHICH WILL HAPPEN! Everything ISN'T perfect, There is always room for improvement. There is also ALWAYS room for opinion...that's what this forum is here for, along with the dissemination of information. Without the FREEDOM to express opinion, without fear of reprisal, there would be no need for a "forum" (look up the definition of "forum" sometime...), and we could all move to North Korea.

Anyway, it is nice to see REASONABLE, intelligent thought displayed in writing, no matter the issue, and no matter the side. I don't mind being disagreed with, in fact, I enjoy a healthy debate; however, the south turn of so many threads due to childlike behavior is all too common...too many people need to grow up and learn to express their feelings an opinion without stomping, pouting, and pitching a little temper tantrum like a baby without a bottle...

As a person with some vested interest in the MDB (my little cousin is a Crimsonette), I have to disagree. I didn't go to the Ole Missy game Sat. night, but the halftime show at the Utah State game was AWESOME!!! One of the best I have seen. And this from 10 years of attending games and graduating from U of A in 1997. I loved it, I loved the choreography, and the whole half-time show was a spectacle. I guess that is what the bathrooms and concessions are for: people who don't like halftime shows.

Great Job MDB!!!!!!

Wow

No QB controversy this year so we'll turn to Halftime. Must mean things are great in BAMA country. Oh and anytime anyone ends a post asking for no flames it should be an indication that they are expecting disagreement. Well there was plenty on this thread and in some cases such hatefulness toward fellow posters, both those supporting and objecting. As for myself, I cannot help but offer by best wishes to band members and their families that come to this board. Keep marching, keep playing and hold your head high. Accept that all can never be pleased but respect their openions and take a step back and reflect. What's important is your own satisfaction in your accomplishments and your self worth. If we put a stage on the field and brought out either a country music great or a rock and roll great, there would be arguments in the performance. Me, well I'd want "Cream" to reunite, you may want Hank Jr or Garth. WOW we 2-0 let's play ball. Oh and don't forget, there is a MDB Alumni board here that could very well be more interested in our comments. So what you think Moderators, should it be passed along.

First of all, Kathryn was not a "Dr." The fact that she did not have a Ph.D. was a frequent source of contention. Secondly, she did not always have a different show every other week. She basically had 3 shows per year. If she were director this year, the shows would likely be as follows:

USU, UM, and WCU--all the same show but facing the east stands for the WCU game.

USC--a different show; a partial of that show as pre-game for homecoming; special halftime for homecoming due to presentation of court. Complete 2nd show @ UT.

New "3rd" show for MSU and AU.

It remains to be seen, but I'd imagine that Ken will do something similar.

As I said before, I was singularly unimpressed with halftime shows last season. I didn't care for the musical selection or the showmanship at all; however, I did take note that the alignment and marcing and maneuvering was considerably improved from previous years.

This year's show is a vast improvement over last year. In my opinion, it is a considerable move toward a "Kathryn" show. The musical selections may indeed be a bit more musically challenging than those Kathryn used and may not be as recognizable or entertaining as many fans are used to; however, they are good songs with full sounds and I found them very enjoyable.

I especially enjoy "Big Noise from Winetka!" This reminds me of the Bridgman Drum and Bugle Corps of the early 80's. They performed that song really well; however, I don' think they had a thing on our own MDB!

Ken's style is to produce much more of a "Corps style" show than did Kathryn. For fans, it's a matter of personal preference. I can enjoy either as long as they are performed well and this version of the MDB is performing as well as any previous version.

Again, I must digress and complain about the band's seating location in the stands. Still haven't heard any music during the game. Did hear the drums a couple of times on Saturday night. I remember how sad it was last season when UT came for a visit. I heard "Rocky Top" a bazillion times but never heard "Yea! Alabama!" even once while seated in BDS! Now, that sux!

Mdb

I have not had the opportunity to watch the band this year due to working the games. Some one please fill me in , are the numbers up ? What are the songs the band is playing this year? I am a fan of The MDB and did think they were a little down last year, but that usually occurs when a new director takes over. Anyone ?

Not a Hummer

My section clapped like I've never noticed before to show appreciation to the band at the end of the show. I admit, I haven't hummed any of the tunes today. But, I sure as heck enjoyed and appreciated the halftime Saturday night. It was stellar in marching, music, in "show." I enjoyed every aspect of it.

If the MDB is focused on marching again, will they go back to forming the score at half-time the way that they used to under Colonel Carleton K. Butler?

Honest criticism is okay, but when you mess with one, you mess with all. When you insult the director, you insult the band no matter if you say it's not directed at the members. Dr. O and his staff have worked hard on this show. It is okay to disagree with music selection, but don't insult our musicianship or execution of the show by saying that Ole Miss's band was better. Ole Miss's band has never been better than us and never will be. As a music educator, I didn't observe anything wrong with Saturday's performance other than minute details that only the trained eye and ear would catch. We can agree to disagree, but please make more informed arguments than you've already made.

sorry I didn't make it more clear, BUT...

I was ONLY criticising (NOT insulting) the MUSIC SELECTION and the general SHOW style of this year's (and last year's) MDB...The musicianship was and is ALWAYS far ahead of ANYONE else's band, ALWAYS! Now and in the Scott era...no argument there...BE SURE YOU READ AN ENTIRE POST BEFORE MAKING A REMARK!

Again, as a musician of 30+ years AND a former band member, I feel quite qualified to criticise musicianship as well, BUT THAT WAS NOT THE POINT OF THIS THREAD...it was simply to point out that LOTS OF US (everyone in my section of the stadium) feels that the halftime shows (while better than last year) are BORING from a song selection/show point of view. I think you can still demonstrate skills/musicianship/marching ability with a more upbeat show. What was the highest tempo for the fastest tune that was played last Saturday? MAYBE 100 BPM? I don't remember, but even then, it wasn't enough to get people excited where we were sitting, and again, it goes back to last year as well...

We can all disagree, and again, I'll state that this is one of the purposes of this forum---to express opinion, along with spreading (accurate!) information...NOT TO ATTACK EACH OTHER! Those of you with a chip on your shoulder do not need to respond to threads where you disagree, because it comes out as a personal attack instead of an intelligent discourse on why you disagree! Let's KEEP IT CIVIL FOLKS! We're all brothers and sisters here (except for you few lurking Vol's ;) )....

Also, I made it clear that I TOTALLY supported the members, and that I respect them for their hard work, in ALL bands. They are often underappreciated...

I would suggest you change your Title, "I feel Sorry for".
Why on earth would you feel sorry for the MDB members, they must like what they are doing or they would not be a member. Your started the post in the most negative way which opened the door for you to be flamed. I guess now we should all feel sorry for you.

NOT Negative...

AG...I've read a lot of your posts, and you must be one with a LARGE chip on your shoulder...How is my original post negative against the band members? I was basing that statement on how, at least where i sit, so many people are down on the halftime shows, and to be an MDB member now isn't the same as it was under Ms. Scott (I wrote Dr. earlier, mistakingly). B/c of the talent and work that these folks have and put in, and working with bands a lot myself, I am lending a sympathetic ear, as I've been associated with shows where they are written and develped with more of a bend toward "competition" than for popular consumption. There are a relative few in the public audience that will appreciate the "competition" style (I do appreciate it...I know what skills are involved...) when compared to the "populist" selections (for example, compare classical music selection to popular music selection...where are the platinum records coming from?..), although it does demonstrate the talent level of the band to a greater degree. HOWEVER, my post still stands as a NON-NEGATIVE post, just a critical observation of the selections for a "populist" game day attendance, where at least from where I sit, most are not enjoying the show to the degree they had in the past...

And, AG, I'm not asking anyone to feel sorry for me. There is no room for ANYONE to flame on this (or any other) forum. We should agree to disagree and be able to have a polite discourse on football related issues without threat of irrational, knee-jerk attacks...They're becoming all too common here, unfortunately, when someone states a view that isn't a "feel good" "Happy Days" kinda vibe...

That said, this is the best forum on the net, and I really like the new features (and servers). Thanks to all of the moderators and technicians who work to keep this thing going...!

Very well said mf627. Many people do not know what really went on during those times. Ms. Scott is gone and people need to see that and get over it. Either support the band or go get a hotdog at halftime.

There's going to be an AWFUL lot of people getting hot dogs at halftime.

You play to your base, not above it.
