Mack Brown does indeed seem to be a fine man, but what has he accomplished that is outstanding? He's only had 2 years out of 26 in which he's won anything. His W/L loss record is very good at Texas, but my God, it is Texas, which is one of the dream jobs in all of CFB. We have coaches in the SEC that are struggling just to become bowl eligible that are IMO better coaches than MB. Put Bob Johnson or Rich Brooks at Texas for 12 years and I'd bet you anything that they add a lot more to the trophy case than Brown has.
Mack Brown took a horrible Tulane team from 1-10 to a bowl game in three years. Keep in mind that he did that while LSU was winning SEC championships and finishing the year ranked in the top ten at the exact same time.

He also took North Carolina from two 1-10 seasons to a Peach Bowl in his fifth year - and remember, his team was the ONLY BLEMISH on Ga Tech's 1990 national champions (they tied).

Go back and look at the time period between Darrell Royal and Mack Brown and tell me what you see. Fred Akers inherited a pretty good cupboard, David McWilliams did not, and John Mackovic managed to alienate his entire fan base in the span of about three games - going from the savior of the world upon the Nebraska upset in 1996 to a 66-3 loss to UCLA in early 1997.

I don't approve of all he's done, but he seems to me to be a gentlemanly sort and he is successful at what he does.

OU has been to a truckload of BCS games in the last ten years. Look at Texas' record against OU, esp recently, and tell me about Mack.

And no, I'm not a Texas fan at all. I do, however, think he's been a classy guy.

(And I live in Dallas, so I see a lot of the guy on TV).

Mack Brown is a great guy, but as a coach he seems to rely too much on a single player to win games and not lead very much and really just put the game in his quarterback's hands. I've never heard any coach talk about a single player so much or seem so crippled without that player. He never shut up about Vince and he never shuts up about Colt now. I never hear him talking about the fundamental of football, like what direction the team needs to take to fill their wholes and get better. I never hear him address the problems of his team and what needs to be done. Here are post-game (Mizzou and A&M) quotes by Mack Brown:

"Colt has had a very tough year, and he's been sick; he's been hurt. We've got the old Colt back now, so we're ready to make this stretch run."

"Colt McCoy was unbelievable. I don't remember any performance like that, period. He was a great leader and never even blinked. I don't get to vote for Heisman, but if anyone has a better Heisman moment than that, then I'd like to see it."

On the other hand, Colt is definately the real deal not just as a player but a leader. Everything he says reveals how focused and driven and single-minded he is, and I don't doubt that this team's success is about 65 percent Colt and 35 percent the rest of the team with a couple of tenths of a percent MB. I almost think its unfair the pressure that he has, because, from what I've seen, he's the true leader of this team. I could be wrong but it seems like Mack really expects Colt to win the games.

That would be correct. Unless my memory is faulty (a distinct possibility) it seems not so many years ago that UT was talking about firing Brown over a couple of bad seasons.
If by bad seasons, you mean a year in which Texas only won 10 games (we have won at least 10 games for nine straight years), then.. well. maybe.

Perhaps you are referring to some persons in the media stirring it up and some internet fans calling for his head because Ou had that 5 year run against us earlier this decade.

Mack is a great ambassador for not only Texas but college football.. he doesn't physically or mentally abuse players, makes time for returning players and does things like.. this past year, he went with other college coaches to Iraq.

There's nothing fair about the criticism at all, but any HC who has success with highly ranked recruiting classes has to live with people saying that he's winning on talent alone. Of course, there are many examples of HCs who couldn't win even with outstanding talent (Zook, Coker)...

I have always thought Mack was a decent coach however since the start of this NC game stuff I have lost a ton of respect for the texas fan base and their coach.. Mostly the fans but Browns constant talk of underdog and david v.s. goliath crap is really starting to make me rethink my texas stance....

Interesting... since on Hornfans, for the most part, you will read nothing but respect for your program and team this year. Most knowledgeable Texas' fans expect a hard fought, close game. Very few fans, (unlike the fan base perhaps represented on this site) have said that Texas is going to "blow out" Alabama.

As for talk of the underdog, that is merely for the media and casual fan sake. Four years ago when ESECPN was touting USC as the greatest assemblage of talent since Julius Caeser crossed the Rubicon in 49 BC, we sat there and listened to how we had no chance at all... for the most part this year, the pundits are all picking Alabama and have made Texas the prohibitive underdog. From a psychological point of view, why wouldn't a coach play up to that? Keep the likelihood of bulletin board material to a bare minimum.

Now, what is being said to the team away from the cameras is going to be very different than what is said to the press corp.. especially from the defensive side coached up by Muschamp. Imagine Mack is telling the team to let the media have its fun.. but for the team to remember who it is, our record of success over the course of the past decade... etc.

I like the psychological games being played.

Add to that the constant defending of all things Mack Brown and it starts to sound a lot like the UT fans not only trying to convince us but themselves as well of Mack's incredible coaching ability.

They are a wee bit touchy, no?

I always thought that "prohibitive underdog" meant one team was favored over the other by 3-4 TDs. Last I looked UA was a five point favorite. That's not going to prohibit anyone from betting...

Post game from our last Rose Bowl. He cautions the team to show class and give USC the respect they deserve. First 2 minutes is a bunch of singing that y'all don't care about, but you should at least watch from 5:13 or so to the end.

I lived in Austin for a couple of years and saw coach Brown at restaurants a couple of times. Really good guy. He got a big kick out of me pitching a home and home vs. Bama

I would love to see this happen at Jerry World (new Cowboys Stadium) in the DFW area. We are already starting to recruit in Texas a little / this would greatly enhance our presence in Texas.

Every fan base has some who wear colored glasses and predict blowouts on every game. I will be surprised if there is a blowout by either team in this game; but I will be more surprised if Texas blows out Bama. That is simply because Bama has a balanced attack and Texas does not. If Texas gains more than a hundred yards on the ground, they will have done something not many teams have done on us all year. If we gain less than a hundred; if INGRAM gains less than a hundred...the same applies.

I have gone against my usual rule never to bet on sports for this game. I gave a guy five points and Texas for five bucks....

I feel good about it....
