Mack Brown took a horrible Tulane team from 1-10 to a bowl game in three years. Keep in mind that he did that while LSU was winning SEC championships and finishing the year ranked in the top ten at the exact same time.Mack Brown does indeed seem to be a fine man, but what has he accomplished that is outstanding? He's only had 2 years out of 26 in which he's won anything. His W/L loss record is very good at Texas, but my God, it is Texas, which is one of the dream jobs in all of CFB. We have coaches in the SEC that are struggling just to become bowl eligible that are IMO better coaches than MB. Put Bob Johnson or Rich Brooks at Texas for 12 years and I'd bet you anything that they add a lot more to the trophy case than Brown has.
He also took North Carolina from two 1-10 seasons to a Peach Bowl in his fifth year - and remember, his team was the ONLY BLEMISH on Ga Tech's 1990 national champions (they tied).
Go back and look at the time period between Darrell Royal and Mack Brown and tell me what you see. Fred Akers inherited a pretty good cupboard, David McWilliams did not, and John Mackovic managed to alienate his entire fan base in the span of about three games - going from the savior of the world upon the Nebraska upset in 1996 to a 66-3 loss to UCLA in early 1997.
I don't approve of all he's done, but he seems to me to be a gentlemanly sort and he is successful at what he does.
OU has been to a truckload of BCS games in the last ten years. Look at Texas' record against OU, esp recently, and tell me about Mack.
And no, I'm not a Texas fan at all. I do, however, think he's been a classy guy.
(And I live in Dallas, so I see a lot of the guy on TV).
