It's probably already been said, but HUNH teams will never field a strong shut down defense. The two philosophies clash at the molecular level. I really don't understand why Auburn/Oregon/Oklahoma/etc. fans complain about their defenses.

Ellis Johnson was a highly thought of DC before coming to Auburn. In abstract though, I do think Gus will have problems getting a great DC to come there. Not because of some desire to be the center of attention but the fact that his offense's tempo makes it harder on the DC to succeed.

Hard to say what, if anything, CWM will do here. Chizik was a fantastic DC who has decided to stay out of coaching and make his money as a commentator.

Without knowing his contract, it's hard to even guess what CWM will do. If his contract is like most, he'll get paid X amount of dollars and that amount is off-set by his salary if coaches somewhere else. IOW, if his contract is typical, if he coaches next year (and if he continues receiving salary instead of a one-time buyout) he'd essentially be working for free - he'd make the same money if he stayed at home with his family.
Muschamp will get the remaining $6 million left on his contract no matter what his new employer pays. Jimmy Sexton probably just bought a few new cars when he found that out.

I think Muschamp would be an interesting get. He's good enough that I don't think it would be terrible for Auburn. I still think the game pace will dull his effectiveness compared to the first Auburn tenure. People have to realize all the pieces fit to create a great scoring defense. Heck our special teams and defense created the first 5 points last weekend. So it can even be said for defense's positive effect on offense too.

I really do not think Muschamp will go back ot Auburn... I don't care if money is a factor or not, but Jay Jacob and Will Muschamp had rocky realtionship and there is no telling that he'll stay after one year, if he goes go to Auburn, thus creating uncertainiies with recuits and players. I dont think Auburn wants that... plus.. Gus theory and Will's theory on recuits are completely different.

I do see him going to SC, Texas A and M, and some team in ACC. It's possiby he'll take mid-level coaching job ( which he probably will)

Thanks, hadn't followed up on his contract. If that's the case I suspect he'll take a DC position at a 'contending' school if offered.

Probably can thank the new SECN contract money for that windfall.

I think we'll hear rumors of him " accepting" the job in early December. They would want new coach in place for the recuiting period....

Re: I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT GUS !!!! And i am wanting everone's input.

CGM is a good coach, but as stated above, I would not ever to expect him to have a good defense because of the stress a HUNH offense puts on the defense.

Athlete focus aside, HUNH offenses are designed to score quickly. So even if they are successful the defense goes right back on the field with minimal rest. Even a great defense from a scheme/athletic standpoint is going to be worse if it gets tired. HUNH is also designed to maximize opportunities by raising the number of possessions, which also negatively affects your own defense. The whole concept is going to push towards winning shootout games rather than reducing scores.

We argued about this at work for an hour yesterday, and IMHO CGM should be thinking about the whole thing and decide how he wants to go. If he wants to continue down the same route, he needs a DC that is a high risk/high reward guy. For those old enough to remember, I'm thinking a Joe Don Baker type whose idea of conservative is to only blitz 3. If they think they can score a ton, then the goal should be to force mistakes by the other team and pull out to a big lead.

This also means that you need to get agreement from whomever your DC is to know where he fits into the whole. Stats are always going to be bad, unless the offensive scheme helps the defense out. This was why I believe Jim McElwain was our best OC ever. He got it, that offensive focus could be about making everyone successful and that sometimes even scoring wasn't the main goal. Sometimes, running the clock to zero was better than a field goal with time on the clock.

Yup, I hope everyone remembers the off-season when Ellis Johnson was complaining about the pace in practice and what it was doing to his defenders...

Re: I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT GUS !!!! And i am wanting everone's input.

I dunno.... He seems like a good guy overall and I don't think he's so vain as to sacrifice winning games.

He's actually only the 2nd Barn coach I don't strongly dislike next to Chizik. He just needs to make a move and get a top flight D Coordinator.

Of course it's best for us and everyone else that they continue to stink on D because they are really good on offense. He's just been stubborn this year trying to force the pass when they should have played like last year and taken advantage of Marshall's legs with the added combo of Cap and Roc.

Hopefully their gameplan in the Iron Bowl is to keep throwing because Landon, Perry, Eddie, and Cyrus are on FIRE right now :D
Doug Barfield will always be the Barner coach that I dislike the least.

Re: I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT GUS !!!! And i am wanting everone's input.

Hugh Freeze was asked in an interview (when they were still undefeated) if the HUNH can win championships in the SEC. He said (I am paraphrasing) when he first got to Ole Miss, he thought it could. But he sees you have to rest your defense some and not put them in bad positions, so while his teams would still do some tempo, they would definitely slow down more as the game goes on.

I don't know how this has held up with Alabama sputtering a bit since the end of the first quarter of the Tennessee game, but Alabama was actually running more plays/game than Auburn around mid-season.

I think the tempo across the board has slowed down quite a bit this season

Alabama has run 723 plays in 10 games this year (72.3 plays a game).

Auburn has run 714 plays in 10 games this year (71.4 plays a game).

Bama hasn't had near as many the last few weeks as it did earlier in the season.

Did you mean Joe Lee Dunn, the sockless DC for every school in the SEC?

I think Ellis Johnson is a good defensive coordinator. He turned SC around and was effective at Alabama. I just think that when you have a HUNH offense on the field, it doesn't give the defense much time to rest and gives the opposing offense more opportunities to score.
As long as Gus is running the fast paced offense, AU will never have a dominant defense statistics-wise. But it isn't because of the bad DC. I would guess Saban himself would have a hard time being a dominant DC in that strategy. That is also the reason Oregon, Arizona and other fast pace offenses never have good defenses.

Ok, My wife a big Auburn fan, DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT. She actually is very knowledgeable about football, I MEAN HECK !!!! I use to coach, Me and her was talking the other night ad we both came to this conclusion. GUS will never hire a big name defensive coach cause he want's all the accolades. She said and it makes since, . He likes it all to be about him. What do you guy's think. Look I know us bama fans don't care, But I thought it something that has not been talked about.
I do not think she is right. If she is, then Gus is guilty of the same thing he complained about CGC doing, according to rumors. I am sure coaches have an ego to stoke, but in the end they want to win and be recognized rather than fail and be forgotten.
