I will never buy another Daniel Moore print...

First of all, I want to apologize for the rant and raving of this post... but enough is enough. I really feel that I have been ripped off big time by Daniel Moore.

Today I received a flyer from New Life Art, Inc. (a.k.a. Daniel Moore Rip-Off Corp.) The flyer offered a "Time-Limited Edition Original Canvas Replica" of "The Kick".

The replica "captures Van Tiffin's historic 53 yard field goal that beat Auburn in 1985".

In 1989 I purchase the original print, "The Kick", 809/2500. I really thought that this and other Daniel Moore's were limited...

Later in the late 80's and early 90's, I bought "The Coach and 315", 2702/3150, "The Goal Line Stand", 511/5000... and more... "Desperation Block", "Kick Two", "Crimson Legacy", and two others that are stored and not framed... "92 Championship" and in 2000 I purchased "In the Swamp" or what-ever the title.

Guess what... none of these are limited prints.

After 15-20 years, Daniel Moore now has a high-quality reproduction copier/printer and putting out his "limited prints" as fast as the money can come in!

New Life Art, Inc. seems to be a very appropriate name.

Again, I will never buy another Daniel Moore print. I highly encourage others not to purchase "limited prints" from Daniel Moore.

Roll Tide...

BZ - I believe you may have misunderstood what he is promoting with the new prints. I believe the new prints are actually going to be on canvas and not the glossy type paper that the others are on. Truly two different surfaces presenting two distinctly different effects on the art. Also, remember that the "limited edition" term refers to several different categories of quality for each print (Artist's Proof, Signature Edition, etc). For instance for "The Kick", there may be only a 100 "limited edition" Artist's Proof copies but 2500 "limited edition" Regular Edition copies. This is a good marketing decision which helps keep prices at a premium for his products...nothing wrong with that. Remember the 4 P's of marketing with Dr. Robicheaux (spelling)!

One other thing to consider too, Daniel Moore is just like the rest of us in that he's just out trying to make a living for himself and his family. It just so happens that he depends on certain events of a football game (or sporting event for that matter) to use as an inspiration for his art. It goes without saying that Alabama football prints have been his cash cow for many years now and given our recent football woes, quite honestly, there hasn't been too much to be inspired by...catch my drift? Case in point, check out his latest print at New Life Art...it's for LSU! Not only is Mr. Moore drawing football scenes for other schools but I believe he is attempting to rekindle the Alabama market by offering past prints with a new wrapper around it (so to speak). In fact, he even turned to Alabama basketball for one of his last prints (the one with Pettway against Florida) and he may do it again for his next one with us beating Stanford and Syracuse to get to the Elite 8...who knows?

I truly believe he's not trying to rip anyone off at all. He's been a part of Alabama football for many years now and IMHO, it's simply a matter of economics and trying to keep his business afloat while his cash cow returns from the pasture.

Roll Tide!

Stride:

I too had Dr. Robicheaux. I'm not sure if that is how you spell it either. My 2 favorite classes were Dr. Webb's legal studies and Dr. Strickland's business policy. Those are 2 great teachers. Ah memories.

Not too many great subjects to paint for the past few seasons, and Dan probably has a boat payment coming due. I agree with you that it's a bit slimy. I was always under the impression that a limited edition print meant just that, and once the run was complete, the dye was destroyed. But Moore seems to figure that he can print and sell more, as long as he prints them on a different material. What's next, black velvet or mirrors?
Ah well, you could always buy original Picassos. I hear that he's not painting any more, and the one that went on the block this week sold for over $100M.

Butcher - I had Dr. Webb as well...fantastic professor. Did you ever notice how he knew the mascot for basically every high school? It was absolutley amazing. If you recall, LGS200 was always a pretty large class and he took attendance each day. He would randomly call on students throughout class. He would ask you where you were from and where you went to high school and then say something like "Oh yes, the Mighty Mounties of Shades Valley" or "So, Mr. Butcher, you were a Grissom Tiger were you?" It never failed! And it wasn't just schools from Alabama...he knew them from everywhere.

HitURStride and The Butcher,

Very good points... but if you had only said, "I'm buying the next Daniel Moore print."... that would have given your logic a little more creditabiliy.

Please confer with Dr. Robicheaux, Dr. Strickland and Dr Webb and let them give their learned experiece to this sales scam.

I would eagerly listen to their fine point of marketing... but my money says that they would say that this is a "very limited opportunity to get shafted!".... and if you are in marketing, you would get an A+.

If you buy the art for the feelings it inspires in you it shouldn't matter how many times it's been printed. The printings affect the value, yes, but tell the truth, do you really want your children or your children's children selling those paintings? Those things will be heirlooms. And the memories that they inspire are a million times more valuable than the paintings will ever be. I understand that continually using the words "limited print" is a little dubious but if the money he makes keeps the man painting our fondest memories then I'm all for it. I don't want him to stop. His gift is priceless.

Bama Torch in Pcola,

To answer your question, no, my grand-children has nothing to do with my feeling...

How many "The Coach and 315" do you want to see... on T shirts, towels, and baseball caps... Those would really be good memories!

I really feel that Daniel Moore has sold us out to make the big bucks... just my feelings and right now, I sticking with it!

This will be my last post on the subject...

You still have a limited edition print. The new Kick is on canvas. This practice is no different for other artist. I have both limited edition prints and canvas of some Thomas Kinkade paintings and I will soon have a canvas of The Kick. I don't think your anger is justified but if you are really po'ed, shoot me an email and I will take the original you got off your hands. Fair market value of course.
