It's "Pah-key-ton."

Let's keep our $4 Billion a year and build some new refineries.

Its not an easy topic, that's for sure. Do we walk away and risk the radicals overrunning the country and perhaps being sucessful in smuggling a nuke into the US somwhere in the future because we drastically reduce our presence and intelligence in the region?

Or do we keep pumping Billions into a couthry that is obviously playing both sides, and we may wind up finding a nuke on our doorstep anyways?

Either way we are spending massive amounts of money that we don't really have to spend. I'm sure there are good, honest people that live in Pakistan, but it feels too easy sometimes to think that the whole lot should be beaten into submission, WWII style.

Again, no easy solutions on this one.

If Pakistan STARTS to devolve into a civil war type situation you will probably see the quickest multinational coalition in history formed. Not to invade but to bomb all possible nuke sites into oblivion. Nobody wants the "crazier" Pakistanis to get hold of those nukes.

It's interesting how bin Laden may screw us even in death...I wonder if he planned it to be this way.

Also, I agree with the India comment. It seems that we'll now be committed to a long-term presence in Afghanistan...to keep Pakistan in a U.S./India vice.

You betcha arse we are. We didn't build the largest military base on Earth there for nothing.

I agree with one poster saying that just bomb the nuke sites. If they go off so what it is not here. Nobody over there cares if this nation is hurt by a dirty bomb or not.

Unofficially we have operational security over those sites. If the govt goes then we wont. I think we would like to keep India on a leash but don't think the Pakistanis don't sweat the Indians because they do. If both weren't nuked up it would be easy to just drop the leash.

But India is not playing ball with us, at least according to Fareed Zakaria:

India strategic planners aren't thinking
It looks like we didn't offer India some of our more advanced fighters, just upgraded F16s and F/A18s.

“It was a by-the-book technical assessment that the American F-16 and F/A-18, despite their upgrades, are not future- generation aircraft,” Kapoor said by phone. “They can remain current for another five or 10 years, but this deal is going to determine the operational capacity of our air force for the next 30 years.”

I don't have a problem with not offering them our latest and greatest. They haven't shown themselves to be a consistent ally. Same for Pakistan.

A lesson from my daughter's pre-k class might be instructional for India: You take what you get, and you don't get upset. ;)

We are not at war with islam.
And anybody who suggests really closing the US borders can only be motivated by some primordial hatred of brown people.

I understand what you are saying but I also hope at the same time you not directing that assessment towards me. I am not a proponent of closing our borders, and grew up with many friends who are 'brown people'.

My point was more of if we keep a presence in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region, we keep their (radicals) focus on us there and less on doing something over here.

And when I use the term 'radicals' I am talking narrowly in specfic regards to the group of people Al Qaeda/Taliban that wish us harm.
