Erickson took over an Oregon State team in 1999 that not only had not had a winning season in 29 seasons, they had won TWO OR FEWER games 17 of those 29 years. Another five of those they'd won three, meaning that in 22 of the 29 seasons preceding Erickson's arrival, Oregon State had gone 3-8 or worse.

In his first year, they went to their first bowl game since the 1964 Rose Bowl and for only the fifth time ever with a 7-5 record. The next year, they went 11-1 and lost only to Washington and gave them a better game than "we wuz robbed" Miami did. Granted, he couldn't keep it at 11-1, but do you really think Dabo could go 11-1 at OREGON STATE?

And keep in mind he didn't get fired, he got called by the NFL.

Again, I think Dabo is the better college coach, but the "he inherited Miami" doesn't fly with what Erickson had to do at Corvallis. And for what it's worth, he put that program on a solid foundation for years as they had winning seasons in 6 of the 7 years after Erickson left.
Don't remind me - the 49ers called him, and it was immediately regretted...

Don't really have an opinion about this, but anytime we reason "Coach X" only won because of "QB Y" or "QB Z" it opens up a discussion about other NC teams who had great QBs.

Even Bama. Do we win in 2017 without Tua? OR 2020 without Mac? Or, '11 and '12 without AJ?

I think the two CNS NCs that CNS won at Bama despite the QBs were '09 and '15. It's not Gmac or Coker didn't make plays, but they were more supporting cast than the stars on those teams.

I think this is a valid point, too.

Sure, Dabo "only won" because he had Sexual Assault and Sunshine, but Urban Meyer won a national championship with a THIRD-STRING QB for Pete's sake. Nick Saban won a national championship at LSU with a guy named Matt Mauck taking snaps.

Besides - if that's the argument, you have to give Coach X credit for recruiting him, too. It's like when people say, "Belichick never won anything without Brady."

My first words are always, "Okay, but who drafted Brady?"

Luck DOES play a role - with everybody, okay?

Saban only won the 2012 national championship because Ohio State was on probation, too, but nobody ever wants to say that if it's someone they like.

I saw Belichick on some ESPN thing about Brady and he said when people asked him how/why other teams passed on Brady he replied that the Pats passed on him until the 6th round so it's not like they knew anything about him that anyone else didn't know.

And in the reverse of the discussion above, IF Bledsoe doesn't get hurt, does anyone even know who Tom Brady is? Does Belichick win any Super Bowls?

Okay but here is the point. Urban Meyer won with Leak, Tebow, and Cardell jones in the two toughest conferences by far. Aside from a loose argument about Tebow, none of his quarterbacks have the insane amount of talent as Deshaun or Lawrence. Heck Cardell Jones was the 3rd string quarterback on that 2014 Ohio St team.

Dabo really hasn’t faced a tough schedule with the exception of 2020. And his only two national championships were with top 15 picks as quarterbacks in the nfl draft.

Also Saban has won national championships with only two first round quarterbacks. AJ Mccarron, Gmac, and Coker really were the definition of game managers.

Maybe here is the more clear point. After they beat us in Santa Clara everyone and their mother proclaimed Clemson as the new dynasty and Dabo as the new master of college football. Yet here we stand here waiting for the next national championship by the Taters. Yeah they played for another one (because of the refs), and got destroyed in their rematch in 2020 vs Ohio State but really when since that night where Ryan Day and Justin Fields put on a party in New Orleans has anyone outside of the ACC feared Dabo or Clemson???

My point is Dabo seems to be like a typical coach that fields a good 4-5 year roster and gets lucky with a quarterback and wins a championship. But it happened twice for him. Yes credit him for recruiting them but at the same time you can’t ignore what came before that run and after that run. I see Dabo as a guy who had a great run more than a guy who developed a championship culture like Saban and Urban.

So many people fail to recognize that a great coach needs great assistants as well, well and great players too. Just because you're a great coach, doesn't mean you can do it all. We saw a lot of that with Coach Saban losing the best assistants and having to work with lesser assistants, and the results were predictable. I bet he had some great assistants at Oregon State, but he couldn't take that model to the NFL for some reason.

Yes... Even the Barn had a solid cast of 5th year seniors who had been around for years during their 2010 season. They had Cam on the offense and Fairly was a one man wrecking ball on the DL. In addition to those two guys, they had something like 18 seniors who started and played the major roles.

- Coaching at the head and coordinator levels
- Coaching at the positional level
- Total team program (S&C, nurtrition, discipline, academics, etc.)

- QB that doesn't look the game, a plus if they are a stud
- Seniors / experienced guys who know the ropes and are running 100% at practice and form the all important team leadership
- WR and RB who get it done
- DL who are disruptors

And on down the list... You have to have most of these facets covered to win routinely and win the natty.
