Link: Is Music getting worse?

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

Pop music is largely written by committee now, very few modern pop artists actually write their own music.

While it's become a bit extreme, it's not really new in the pop world. Pop music has always been essentially written to be catchy but disposable. It's fast food, not fine cuisine.

What was fast food back in my youth would be fine cuisine now.😁

I mean, in some ways, yes! Fast food was different 40 years ago than today - far fewer chemicals, seed oils, etc.

Musically? Well, it was much harder to be noticed and the average musician had no way to 'break through'. I believe that 'gate-keeping' helped the music industry remain healthier, but even when we admit that nostalgia plays a huge role with the concept of 'music was better back then',we also have to admit there was some terrible music then, too.

Art is subjective, and while I generally only appreciate music written by artists who play instruments (due to the nature of what's required to master an instrument) as well as artists who work to differentiate themselves (most classic bands had their own distinctive sound, not as common today - in fact, I generally call most modern pop "glorified karaoke" as you could mute the singer and you'd have no clue whose song it actually is), the reality is there is a TON of great music being made today - it's just that the delivery methods aren't nearly as streamlined (it was basically radio most of my life) - now artists release great music in a variety of ways.

Wow, how's THAT for a run-on sentience? :)

I agree there were plenty of bad music on the radio 50 years ago and that hasn't changed. From the video posted by the OP, he states 100k new songs are uploaded every month. So finding good music appears to be more challenging to find. I could be wrong , seeing how what I hear on the radio, tv, being played in public all sounds like fast food.

As one grows older, the energy one is willing to commit to discerning the signal from the noise generally comes at (what feels like) a higher premium.
100% this.

I read an article about a year ago where researchers found that the average music listener stops searching for new music, essentially getting frozen in time, by age 35 or so. After that, newer music begins to sound amore and more like 'noise'.

I suspect if I didn't work in the industry I'd be similar, but I find new stuff all the time that I adore.

What a sad existence not to find new music! I'm glad i don't suffer from that! I really enjoy most all genres I just don't like mixing genres that much. Yes, I'm a genre snob!
