ole sis has reaced the point of irrelevance. They clearly don't take their football seriously;, or at least, not as seriously as making sure everyone is warm and fuzzy. They seem like an 'everyone gets a trophy' program. And you don't win many games that way.

No, I'm not suggesting that dropping the Colonel will mean they start losing games. What I'm suggesting is that they seem to have more on their mind than winning. And so that's what they'll get....

Time for the Devil's Advocate. Notice that the "colonel" is that in name only - no uniform - he's really a plantation owner. Plantation owners frequently had that title in some militia. (And, in fact, when the confederate armies were being formed, they often did end up with the rank.) Like it or not, many African Americans viewed the figure as a symbol of past slavery and repression. In addition, it was hurting their recruiting and had been for many years. All that being said, the connection to football is pretty marginal - it's really a political issue, so, off to NonSports...

Since they're so excited about references to the muppets, maybe they should see if they could get permission to actually use muppets. The Rebel Bear could be Fozzy Bear, or the Rebel Animal could be Animal from the muppets. Or how about Gonzo or Grover since they are blue.:cool:

I, for one, would have been delighted to see them keep him and hand as many stars and bars as possible all over the stadium... ;)

I fail to see how Colonel Reb is any less PC than being the "Rebels" or being called "Ole Miss." Instead of trying to change their mascot, they should just cease calling themselves the "Ole Miss Rebels." They can call themselves the University of Mississippi Delta Devils, so something like that, since Robert Johnson made a deal with the devil at the Crossroads so he could play the blues.
