Ivan the Terrible

Only One Problem I

Would it be too much to wish for a strong low pressure system over our area around the first of next week??

can see with that! If you get your system, which would be a strong cold front with a jetstream dip, we would get SMACKED straight across the face here in the St. Pete., Tampa area! Now if a High would develop off our coast around Ft. Myers or Naples then it might be able to swing it out toward some parts of Mexico were they could evac less people quicker. Then again how about just letting GOD give it a good hard blow into the depths of the gulf! :rolleye2: PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER AND LOOK UP...........

Bonnie, Charlie, Francis, and Ivan can all kiss my Alabama...

This hurricane thing is no joke!!! Being from Alabama, I just experienced my first with Francis in south florida and I can't even watch the hurricane report on TV anymore b/c I get so nervous I make myself sick!!! This is different from a tornado b/c you have a week to sit...watch...prepare...pray...and watch...and pray...and keep watching...you're exhausted before it even arrives!!! I have to admit, even though it's not coming here anymore, I'm not relieved. I'm still just as nervous for my friends and family in Ivan's path...it's too much!!!

BamaLuver

That's not looking too good for you.

Hopefully, the projections will change again.

VJ: I agree, it ain't looking too pretty for the gulf coast right now. On my way to work, all the gas stations were packed & folks were waiting in line. Cars & trucks were streaming in & out of Home Depot and Walmart's parking lot was already full.

I generally always keep a hurricane box each year stocked with batteries, battery-operated lanterns, water, etc., so if it heads this way -- we'll be in fairly good shape. Not sure if I'll stay if it looks like a direct hit and still packing 160 miles per hour winds. I'm good for a 1,2 or 3 category -- but not a strong 4 or 5. We'll pack up the kids, dog and cat and head inland.

Actually, it'd be better for the Mobile area to see it make a turn towards Florida rather than Mississippi. That west side of the storm will be wicked. :(

BamaLuver and Wisten

Hey Guys,

I've been worried about my family and friends in Florida and now it's youse guys. However my son and his family live in Tallahassee so they might still be in danger too until we know which direction Ivan will take.

Take care and good luck!

The 11 AM update shows Ivan now moving to the northwest, so it appears to be turning some.

Anybody along the panhandle might want to find some place north of I-10 to ride this one out.

As of the 8 PM update....

All the computer model tracks converge on the mouth of the Mississippi River

Being born & raised on the gulf coast, I guess I consider myself as much of a "hurricane veteran" as the next person. I've seen my share and we've been lucky enough to make our way through all of them safely. However, Ivan makes me really nervous -- he's just plain mean.

Just say a prayer that this storm weakens considerably before making landfall along our region sometime Wednesday night or Thursday. Mobile's in a real "catch 22" here. Don't want to wish it on our Florida neighbors, however, we really don't want to see the back side of Ivan if it hits the Miss. coast.

Wisten -- Any idea when they'll evacuate Gulf Shores/Orange Beach? I would assume tomorrow morning since that's the time table for P'cola Beach.

BamaLuver, I heard on the radio just a few minutes ago that Riley has ordered mandatory evacuation for Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and all of Baldwin County. Doesn't that include Mobile? Y'all better GET OUTTA THERE - Wisten too!!! Be safe! Ivan is a meany.

P.S. They're also thinking of cancelling both the Auburn AND Alabama games this Saturday because of the heavy rain and wind that will follow Ivan north. Even WE are supposed to get a lot of rain and wind from Ivan up here in Birmingham.

Nan: No, that doesn't include Mobile ... we're a little more inland from the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Thank goodness Ivan is now down to 140 mph winds with a pressure of 924 mb. Compared to last nights 914mb, that's an encouraging sign.

Hopefully, their forecast of further weakening will come to be. Keep your fingers crossed.

You'd better watch out as well -- they predict it to come knocking at your door by Friday.

BTW: The folks on the weather channel are stationed at the USS Alabama Battleship which is actually much closer to Wisten's area than mine. That's right at the mouth of the Mobile Bay and our downtown area. I'm in the very western section of Mobile near the Ala/Miss. state line.

During Frederic, which did enter via Mobile Bay in 1979, we were without power for about 3 weeks.... :(

On the way home

Because of the ages of my children, I decided to go to Birmingham. We have talked to the Daphne Police Department as we begin our trek back home, and are both sad and happy. The damage in Daphne is not as severe as what Foley and Bay Minette suffered.

Once we get home tomorrow morning, we will start posting pictures and lending assistance to those who endured more damage.
