Jalen Milroe is now the starter going forward.

He actually had 2 good runs and is much more mobile than people realize. Even in the post-game breakdown, Jess was solid in Ty getting the start. Then the players only meeting happened…

But he didn't have two good runs; he ran for 11 yards on 2 carries(I think it was an 8 yard run and a 3 yard run?) and even the longer run was damning because it showed just how limited he is with his feet when he gets out of the pocket. That was actually the play if you remember where he was sprinting out of the pocket to the right and it looked like it would be a big gain then the USF defense closed and he took a hit. Buchner was terrible too, but at least he can move a little.

Regardless, when a qb plays more than an entire half and you can count on one hand the number of plus plays(probably with fingers left over?), that's pretty damning into itself. There was the long 45 yard pass, then there was a 14 yarder......then?????........he only had 3 other completions, and 2 of those completions were objectively poor throws(one was the short throw which the reciever had to bend way down to get which allowed him to be tackled at the one, and the other was a very short dump off also off target which limited yac)........

for the record, you can do the same with buchner's have(ie identify plus plays and still have fingers on one hand left over), so I'm not playing favorites.

Neither one of us are in saban's head, but my guess is if either buchner or simpson would have just made a few more positive plays themselves saturday they would be given the next start.

Finally, it's important to note that most people who are ok with milroe starting or even believe he should start against Ole Miss:

1) do not neccessarily think he will play good saturday
2) do not believe he is a capable qb

So it's not like Milroe's performance saturday will show anything about whether saban made the 'right' decision. Rather, I believe the consensus opinion is that all three qbs are pretty poor and if Milroe plays poorly it will go towards confirming that.

I don't know if it was some kind of test or what, but in the article about this, Saban noted that Jalen was a great teammate during the USF game, supported the team despite not playing, and showed the kind of leadership they were looking for. As others have said, I'm going to trust Coach Saban and hope that Jalen finds the groove very soon.
Rare sanity on this thread. Nice post.

I'M AN IDIOT! LOL!

I'm not sure why you think it is "incredible" when you yourself stated you didn't like what you were hearing coming from your sources and you've greatly lowered your expectations. My guess is what you're hearing is probably worth having a meltdown.

I have my doubts that Milroe on winning the West based on my analysis of his play, nor do I like what I’m hearing coming from sources that have been proven to be far more right and in the ball park when they aren’t.

However I’m a Bama fan and will always will support them. So I’m hoping for the best although with far lower expectations. Hey maybe it will be fun.

Whatever you are hearing from your sources, I hope that Coach Saban can fix it and that the team can return to the Bama culture that is expected. I'm sure he is probably stressed out about it, whatever it is, but won't admit that publicly. Hopefully it is nothing too bad. Can you give us any more details? I assume not.

Listen everyone knows the ol has some issues, since the new oline coach has been there we have given up 34 sacks 12 this year, not going to win games like that, if we competent line Ty Simpson can hit the long ball as well as the short passes, he also has some wheels, but our new OC doesn't know how to call RPO's yet, I guess with the oline the way is I don't know who it should be,but it starts there with them

My new theory on how this played out as I try to understand.

Saban realizes that the o-line is the biggest problem after the Texas game. He decides, right or wrong, we are rolling with Milroe as starter because he has the best ability to escape pursuit. He tells Milroe, "You have a better chance of getting hurt because you will be running wild all season. We have to find a workable #2. I am giving those guys all the starter reps this week so we can figure it out. You just need to chill. You aren't playing this week." Milroe is not super happy, makes some comment, but then agrees. Saban says, "I am so committed to this being the way forward, I will announce you as the starter on Monday."

Milroe then tries to be a good teammate and urges on the backups. Offense feels like it is being used in a tryout. Not happy; some griping.

Now, here we are. Saban has found his #2 just like he planned.

**All speculation; No sources.

His sources are telling him Milroe is the QB moving forward…

IF that is the case, then it should tell you the guys behind Milroe are pretty terrible/well behind him as a QB. Not that the team chose a QB for Saban.

I think they are pretty terrible unfortunately.

Also, I get the sense the anti-Milroe crowd is trying to make it as if there is a large contingent of Milroe fans in here who believe in Milroe, believe he will play well, etc.......so that when he doesn't play well they can come back and say "see, I told you so".

I can't speak for everyone in the camp who believes Milroe should start Saturday, but I don't believe in general that's what we think. At all.

I believe Milroe should start Saturday. And I don't believe he will play well. At all. He isn't going to manage the pocket well. He isn't going to be accurate for the most part. He likely won't be totally clean with turnovers. My only hope is that he makes enough plays with his legs and maybe a deep shot here and there that those plays and an opportunistic defense allows us to win........I mean we are td favorites saturday after all.

Not buying it. I just…it’s not…no…

It just seems we a pinning our hope on a QB who can run better than pass.

We've seen this before. Beat the snot out of an average team with that. Play the big boys and can't move the ball.

As for Simpson, I think everyone just wonders IF he could but now it seems strange he isn't being given the chance after Buchner was given the chance. We all have eyes and have seen the 3 of them pass and almost everyone agrees Ty Simpson has the best arm talent. It just seems strange at this point.

'arm talent' is only a part of being a successful pocket/passing qb. Footwork, field vision, processing visual information quickly, managing the pocket and sensing pressure, etc all go into that.

FWIW I watched Ty Simpson play over a half of football and he didn't appear to be anywhere close to being ready on all those latter things(against a really bad team). I think that is the general consensus after watching that game against USF. Neither did Buchner of course.

I am also confused on your stance that Buchner was given a chance but Simpson wasn't. Simpson played over half the game, and played more than Buchner. So I don't understand that line of thinking.

Finally, we aren't 'pinning our hope' on Milroe. I really doubt Saban and the coaching staff expects him to play well.

When we say “Ty hasn’t been given a chance”, we mean as the starter.
