The most recent precedent is Calvin Ridley and a year's suspension. This could turnout that Jamo missed a lot of his rookie season due to recovering from an injury and now missing his sophomore season entirely due to gambling. Not good dude, not good.

CORRECTION: Jamo didn't bet on NFL games but placed bets while at the Lions facility, suspended for 6 games of the 2023 season.

What in the world are these guys thinking. Potentially losing hundreds of thousands of dollars by being suspended for games or the entire season. I don't get it.

I feel like this is the important part here. I know that the rules are the rules, but this is kind of over the top...

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/36253087/wr-jameson-williams-four-lions-suspended-betting

"According to league policy, NFL players and personnel cannot bet on NFL games, the draft or any league-related activities under any circumstances. They also cannot place any bets while at a team facility or on team-related travel.

Williams' representation, Alliance Sports, released a statement of apology on behalf of the wide receiver.

"Jameson takes full responsibility for his actions and is very apologetic to the NFL, his teammates and the fans and city of Detroit," Alliance Sports said. "However, it is important to note that Jameson's violation was not for betting on football but rather due to a technical rule regarding the actual location in which the online bet was placed -- and which would otherwise be allowed by the NFL outside of the club's facility. I don't think it is over the top. When it comes to gambling and sports teams, the team and organization SHOULD BE held to "above reproach" standards. The integrity of the game means that much to their product and the reason their customer base watches. If they want anything besides that, I'm sure the WWE would gladly create a new football division.

If you do this and don't know the rules, you're ignorant.

If you do this and do know the rules, you're stupid.

Dear Willams' representative.... "technical rule = THE rule"

I would be fine with lifetime bans if you bet on the sport and 1+ year bans if you're gambling in the building etc violating league rules that you had to signoff on as player/staff.

I'm tired of the "I knew the rules but didn't think they should be the rules so I did it anyway" moral & ethical decline across the board.

If you don't like the rules, don't play the game.

You're a professional. Act like one.

They need to update the rules as it says pertaining in any gambling on team property which could include team flights. Gambling could be playing fantasy baseball for pay and changing your lineup on the team flight or how about an Alabama and Auburn guy making a friendly wager on the Iron Bowl coming up.

It already states team travel. So, in theory you can not go to a casino while in Vegas to gamble on ANYTHING. I would also assume that means no video poker, horse racing, or anything that doesn’t pertain to football.

I don't gamble. I think gambling is stupid.

I don't question the suspension because the rule was written, so let it be enforced.

That said, an NFL player gambling on a sport unrelated to the NFL should not be a violation of any rule. Or, better said, such a rule is stupid and should not exist. That is, if we are going to say as a society that gambling is ok.

This has been my TED Talk.

Regardless of how "stupid" the rule is, gambling is a huge point of emphasis with the NFL and the most recent example was only a year ago. So in knowing that, his agent of all people should have made it a point Jamo FULLY UNDERSTOOD this. If his agent did do this, and Jamo did it anyway, then the young man has now learned how expensive ignoring workplace rules and policies can be. If not, then he needs to get a new agent.

I believe this will be a big emphasis on the next collective bargaining agreement. I can definitely see the NFLPA addressing the all encompassing rule. IMO, I agree that they should not be able to bet on any form of football. I wouldn't want them to impact the integrity of any level of football, and they do have the connections to do so. I also believe they will address a more structured punishment tier.

I would be surprised if this gets changed. My guess is, one of the reasons for it being all-encompassing is to not have to spend time deciphering whether the bet was on football or not. The easiest thing to do is just make all betting on NFL facilities illegal. Changing it would simply put more work on the NFL teams and they aren't in the business of adding more work to their organizations.

I disagree, respectfully.

A player in debt to ANY bookie or ANYONE for ANY reason is easy prey for helping to fix/influence the outcome of games. All Jameson has to do is drop a key pass at a key juncture, although only a damn fool would be betting on the Detroit Lions in the first place.
