For all of our great qualities as Australians, there is a horrible 'tradition' of what we call 'tall-poppy syndrome'. Cutting ppl down if they get 'too big'. Comments on this article reflect some of that. Ignorance reigns supreme sometimes.

The Japanese have a saying for it: "The nail which sticks out will be hammered down..."

I always get a kick out of the language differences. Thanks for the link.
Haha yup, so much fail/humor in this paragraph:

The Queensland-born sporting star is due to return to the US this week and will play his final season with Alabama University after winning this year's prestigious the Bowl Championship Series - making the Crimson Tide the No.1 college in the US.
But still a great article. Thanks for the link.

Not to worry - the same syndrome is seen here in the US - only we don't have any special name for it - except perhaps "jealousy". If you read the reader comments - I think they say it all really...most Australians couldn't be prouder. Good on ya Jesse... ;-)

Love the article. Other Rugby nations refer to the US as the "sleeping giant", which is to say that they dominate our team (the Eagles) in international competition, but if we ever got interested enough to have even an Arena Football-sized pro rugby league, we'd wipe the pitch with every other nation. I'd chip in a few bucks to see a team of recently-discharged NFL players train for 1-2 years and compete in rugby. Even undrafted prospects.
